Season starts on high note, Lions sing Ford 'Happy Birthday'

The Detroit News

The Detroit Lions gave Martha Firestone Ford a primetime birthday present.

The Lions owner turned 92 on Saturday, and her team made it one to remember with a 24-10 victory Monday night on the road against the New York Giants.

The Lions, who improved to 2-0 on the season, punctuated the victory in the locker room by singing “Happy Birthday” to Firestone Ford.

"I think it's cordial,” Jim Caldwell said Tuesday. “She runs this organization. She means a lot to the players in our organization and I think that it's something that we've done it before and it's a little bit of a tradition so even though it was a belated one because her birthday was a couple days ago. Nevertheless, our players enjoy seeing her and she does a tremendous job for our organization."

The Lions are home Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
