Saturday's prep roundup: Detroit Cornerstone survives duel with Denby

Da'Mon Gilmore supplied 21 points and Alante Coward 20 as Detroit Cornerstone Health & Technology overcame foul trouble to defeat Detroit Denby, 73-65, in boys basketball at the Oak Park Invitational.

Cornerstone's 6-foot-6 starting forwards Kyonias Mason and Isiah Driver both fouled out in the fourth quarter, leaving the school only with its guards to finish the job.

Denby (2-1) managed a 15-0 run at one stage as Cornerstone's Gilmore sat with three fouls. Lemar Kearney had 15 points for Denby.

Gilmore finished with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals to go along with his game-high 21 points. Coward contributed six rebounds and five steals.

"It was a very, very competitive hard fought game," Cornerstone coach Derrick Edwards said. "Small ball ended up working for us."

Detroit Mumford 64, Southfield A&T 49: Anthony Taylor scored 20 and Brandon Green 17 for Mumfield. Cameron McEvans had 17 points for Southfield A&T.


Oak Park 68, Detroit Cody 50: Jeremiah Pettiway scored 22, Lamont Mason 18 and Sinna Sasawo 12 for Oak Park (1-1). DeAndre Turner had 11 points for Cody (1-1).

Detroit Voyager 56, Detroit Central 39: Lemuel Holt had 23 points and 14 rebounds and Elijah Belle scored 13 for Voyager (2-0). Central is 2-3.

Girls basketball

Detroit Country Day 70, Detroit Martin Luther King 58: Adrian Folks scored 16, Jasmine Powell and Kaela Webb each had 15, Maddie Novak added 13 and Maxine Moore 10 for Country Day (2-1). Justyce Mortan had 18 points and Alexis Brown 15 for King.
