Shield’s Pizza in Troy to get $1 million renovation

Shield’s Restaurant and Pizzeria in Troy will close for the summer to undergo a $1 million renovation.

Previously Smith Brothers, this Shield’s location opened in 1992. While cosmetic improvements have been made since then, this is an extensive remodel that will include a new bar and bar area, a new dining room, banquet room, bathrooms, facade and sign. The signature stage area will be removed, the carry-out area will be expanded and the parking lot repaired.

“After 26 years, it’s time to create a fresh, open look,” said Paul Andoni in a press release. “Our goal is to remain a vibrant local, family owned, community oriented business for years to come as we have been since 1992.”

Adoni says Shields will close after Mother’s Day, May 13, and plans to reopen Aug. 1. He recently welcomed restaurant veteran Hassan Haj as a new partner in the Troy business. Haj as extensive restaurant experience in Chicago.

The award-winning, local pizza chain’s history dates back to 1937, and now has three locations, including the Troy restaurant at 1476 W. Maple.

Ron Rea of Ron and Roman LCC in Birmingham will redesign Shield’s, and Christos Karatsikakis has signed on as general contractor.
