Winners and losers from a year of revival on the Tigers’ farm

Sunday, Sept. 9

Triple-A Toledo

Durham N.C. — Jason Coats hit a run-scoring single in the third inning, leading the Durham Bulls to a 3-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday (BOX SCORE).

Durham won the playoff series, 3-1, ending Toledo's season. That should lead to the Tigers calling up more players soon.

Kyle Bird got Jason Krizan to fly out with runners on first and second to end the game for his first save of the season.

Rob Refsnyder scored on Coats’ single to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead after he led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by Jake Cronenworth.

Trailing 3-1, the Mud Hens cut into the deficit in the seventh inning when Chad Huffman hit an RBI single, scoring Pete Kozma.

Ruben Alaniz (2-3) got the win with two innings of scoreless, two-hit relief while Toledo starter Matt Hall (4-1) took the loss in the International League game.

Double-A Erie

Erie's season ended Monday, Sept. 3. Here's the recap from its finale:

Erie, Pa. — Elvis Perez doubled and singled twice as the Akron RubberDucks defeated the Erie SeaWolves, 7-4, on Monday (BOX SCORE).

Ernie Clement doubled and singled twice with two runs for Akron.

Down 2-0 in the third, Erie tied the game when Isaac Paredes hit an RBI single and Will Maddox scored on a fielder’s choice.

After Erie added a run in the fourth, the RubberDucks took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth inning. Mark Mathias hit a two-run double en route to the three-run lead.

The RubberDucks tacked on another run in the seventh when Nellie Rodriguez hit a solo home run.

Nick Pasquale (3-3) got the win in relief while Erie starter Matt Manning (0-1) took the loss in the Eastern League game. Dominic DeMasi pitched two scoreless innings for his first save of the season.

Single-A Lakeland

Lakeland's season ended Sunday, Sept. 2. Here's the recap from its finale:

Lakeland, Fla. — Alfred Gutierrez allowed just four hits over seven innings, leading the Lakeland Flying Tigers over the Palm Beach Cardinals in a 2-0 win on Sunday (BOX SCORE). The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Flying Tigers and a three-game winning streak for the Cardinals.

Eduardo Jimenez got Juan Yepez to ground out with a runner on second to end the game for his 15th save of the season.

Gutierrez (2-4) picked up the win after he struck out four and walked two.

Lakeland scored its runs when Danny Pinero hit an RBI single in the fourth inning and A.J. Simcox hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Austin Sexton (2-4) went two innings, allowing two runs and three hits in the Florida State League game. He also struck out two and walked one.

The Cardinals were held off the scoreboard for the 10th time this season, while the Flying Tigers’ staff recorded their eighth shutout of the year.

Single-A West Michigan

Bowling Green, Ky. — Taylor Walls doubled and singled, and Paul Campbell allowed just five hits over seven innings as the Bowling Green Hot Rods beat the West Michigan Whitecaps, 3-1, on Sunday in the Midwest League Eastern Division Finals (BOX SCORE).

Bowling Green won the playoff series, 2-0, to end West Michigan's season.

Campbell (5-1) picked up the win after he struck out six and walked one while allowing one run.

Bowling Green started the scoring in the first inning when Ronaldo Hernandez hit a two-run single.

After Bowling Green added a run in the second on a single by Carl Chester, the Whitecaps cut into the deficit in the seventh inning when Christopher Proctor hit an RBI single, scoring Colby Bortles.

Elvin Rodriguez (8-8) went six innings, allowing three runs and seven hits in the Midwest League game. He also struck out six and walked one. Jhonleider Salinas pitched two scoreless innings for his sixth save of the season.

Bowling Green improved to 12-3 against West Michigan this season.

Single-A Connecticut

Connecticut's season ended Monday, Sept. 3. Here's the recap from its finale:

Lowell, Mass. — Juan Carlos Abreu hit a walk-off single with two outs in the 10th inning, as the Lowell Spinners defeated the Connecticut Tigers, 5-4, on Monday (BOX SCORE).

Alan Marrero scored the game-winning run after he reached base on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a strikeout by Korby Batesole and then went to third on a wild pitch.

After Connecticut’s Kingston Liniak hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth, Lowell tied the game at 4 in the ninth when Dylan Hardy scored on a wild pitch.

Reliever Kris Jackson (2-1) went 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out four and walking one to get the win. Jayce Vancena (0-2) allowed one run and got two outs in the New York-Penn League game.

Trey Ganns doubled and singled, scoring two runs in the win. Tyler Esplin reached base four times.

GCL West (Rookie ball)

GCL Tigers West's season ended Wednesday, Aug. 29. Here's the recap from its finale:

Jupiter, Fla. — Justin Childers doubled and singled, scoring a run and also driving one home as the GCL Tigers West beat the GCL Cardinals, 9-2, on Wednesday (BOX SCORE). The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the GCL Cardinals.

Ildemaro Escalona tripled and doubled with five RBIs for GCL Tigers West.

GCL Tigers West took the lead in the first when Eliezer Alfonzo hit an RBI single and then scored on a two-run double by Escalona.

The GCL Tigers West later added five runs in the third and one in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

GCL Tigers West right-hander Chavez Fernander (5-1) picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits over 5.1 innings. Opposing starter Francisco Justo (0-2) took the loss in the Gulf Coast League game after giving up six runs and six hits over 2.1 innings.

GCL East (Rookie ball)

GCL Tigers East's season ended Saturday, Aug. 25. Here's the recap from its finale:

Lakeland, Fla. — Ulrich Bojarski scored the winning run on a wild pitch with one out in the 11th inning, as the GCL Tigers East topped the GCL Pirates, 4-3, on Saturday (BOX SCORE).

After GCL Pirates’ Fernando Villegas hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th, GCL Tigers East tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the inning when Mike Torres scored on an error.

Reliever Austin Anderson (2-1) picked up the win after he allowed one run and one hit over three innings. He also struck out one and walked two. Saul De La Cruz (2-2) went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs while walking two in the Gulf Coast League game.

For the GCL Pirates, Villegas singled twice, also stealing a base.
