Tigers’ JaCoby Jones leaves with hip injury

Detroit — The Tigers coaches have been after JaCoby Jones, going back to last year, to run through first base on close plays. His habit is to lunge and stamp hard on the bag — which, the coaches have told him, is dangerous.

He got an abject reminder of that lesson in the first inning Wednesday.

Jones hit a ball down the third-base line in his first at-bat that was stopped on a dive by Indians third baseman Erik Gonzalez. The play at first was close and again, Jones lunged at first base — jamming his leg hard in front of the base.

He immediately went back to the clubhouse with head athletic trainer Doug Teter to have the leg tended to. He came back and played center field in the top of the second, but left the game after the inning. The diagnoses: A left hip bruise.

Victor Reyes entered and played left field. Mikie Mahtook shifted over to center field.
