VanDeWeghe, Langdon reportedly on Pistons’ radar

For the past nine days, the Pistons have been mostly quiet in their quest to fill their vacant positions at team president and head coach. After parting ways with Stan Van Gundy, who occupied both roles, they’ve embarked on a process to fill both.

There hasn’t been any public update on candidates, the preferred process or the timeline to fill either post. It’s a somewhat-crowded market with the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, Toronto Raptors and Pistons still looking for a head coach.

The Pistons also are looking to revamp their front office and could choose to stay with a three-tier system with a team president, general manager and coach, or they could opt for two tiers, with a general manager and coach.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Wednesday that the Pistons have a pool of candidates for the front office.

“Sources: Among candidates that Detroit is showing interest to run its basketball operations: NBA’s Kiki VanDeWeghe, Memphis’ Ed Stefanski, Houston’s Gersson Rosas, Brooklyn’s Trajan Langdon. Brent Barry and Miami’s Shane Battier have been targeted for roles in front office too,” Wojnarowski posted on Twitter.

The key words in the report are “among candidates,” an indication that it’s not an exhaustive list. Former Cavaliers general manager David Griffin likely is under consideration, as well as former Pistons star Chauncey Billups, whom the Cavaliers considered last summer.

The intriguing name on the list is VanDeWeghe, the executive vice president of basketball operations for the NBA and a former player. He started with the Mavericks and moved to become the GM of the Denver Nuggets, both teams he played for during his career. He helped to develop Dirk Nowitzki with the Mavericks and selected Carmelo Anthony in the 2003 draft.

VanDeWeghe, 59, was the interim coach and general manager of the Nets before assuming the NBA role in 2013.

Langdon, the former Duke player, is a young mind the Pistons could look to, in addition to Battier, who also played at Duke and attended Detroit Country Day.

Wojnarowski also reported that current general manager Jeff Bower remains in consideration. Bower is running the front office during this week’s draft combine and until his contract expires on June 30.
