Former Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre opened up to Sports Illustrated's Peter King about his battles with substance abuse, revealing he went to rehab three times during his storied career.

King recalled an exhaustive interview session with the Packers during his 1995 MVP season in his last Monday Morning QB column, calling Favre the most compelling person he's covered in 29 years at SI. Favre disclosed he downed 14 Vicodin at one time.

"I was getting an hour or two of sleep many nights," said Favre in an interview reflecting on that period of his life. "Maybe 30 minutes of quality sleep. I was the MVP on a pain-pill buzz. The crazy thing was, I'm not a night owl. Without pills, I'd fall asleep at 9:30. But with pills, I could get so much done, I just figured, 'This is awesome.' Little did I know (fiancée and now wife) Deanna would be finding some of my pills and when she did, she'd flush them down the toilet.

“I actually went to rehab three times. I saw the most successful, smart people—doctors, professional people—lose it all, ruin their lives."

Favre was treated for his prescription drug addiction, but also sought help for binge drinking.

Favre passed for 71,838 yards and 508 touchdowns in a 20-year NFL career, 16 of those with Green Bay.
