Allen Park — The Detroit Lions added additional linebacker depth on Wednesday, signing Trevor Bates.

A seventh-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2016, Bates (6-foot-2, 247 pounds) was most recently part of the New York Giants practice squad. He also spent several months on the New England Patriots practice squad and offseason roster.

At the University of Maine from 2012-15, Bates appeared in 46 games, tallying 207 tackles, including 35 for a loss. As a junior, in 2014, he was named the team's MVP after recording 60 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three interceptions.

To make room on the roster, the Lions released undrafted tight end DeAndre Goolsby.
