2018 NHL Draft: Meet the newest Red Wings

The News' Ted Kulfan introduces you to the newest Detroit Red Wings.

Filip Zadina

Pick: No. 6 overall (Round 1)

Position: Left wing

Height/weight: 6-foot, 197 pounds

Last season: Halifax (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), 57 games, 44 goals, 38 assists, 82 points.

Scouting report: Projected to be one of the top five players selected, Zadina dropped to No. 6, where the Red Wings quickly grabbed him. An elite goal scorer, Zadina has a great shot and is an outstanding skater. He’s extremely competitive, and is an underrated passer. He can improve defensively, and needs to get stronger along the boards. Didn’t test consistently well physically at  he draft combine.

Joe Veleno

Pick: No. 30 overall (Round 1)

Position: Center

Height/weight: 6-foot-1, 195 pounds

Last season: Drummondville (QMJHL), 64 games, 22 goals, 57 assists, 79 points.

Scouting report: Projected to be a drafted somewhere in the 10 to 15 range, Veleno dropped to the Red Wings at 30. Looking for defensemen, the Red Wings couldn't pass on Veleno. He began playing in the Quebec junior league at age 15, but never really matched the hype or expectations that were placed on him. A good playmaker, scouts also love his character and leadership qualities.

Jonatan Berggren

Pick: No. 33 overall (Round 2)

Position: Right wing

Height/weight: 5-foot-11, 183 pounds

Last season: Skelleftea (Sweden), 38 games, 18 goals, 39 assists, 57 points.

Scouting report: Speedy little forward who never slows down, and can create excitement with his stickhandling. Plays the game hard all 200 feet. Berggren needs to get stronger physically, but some scouts compare him favorably with Nashville star Viktor Arvidsson.

Jared McIsaac

Pick: No. 36 overall (Round 2)

Position: Defenseman

Height/weight: 6-foot-1, 194 pounds

Last season: Halifax (QMJHL) 65 games, nine goals, 38 assists, 47 points.

Scouting report: A teammate of Detroit's first-round pick Filip Zadina at Halifax, McIsaac was considered a late first-round pick himself, before slipping into Saturday’s portion. Physical, can move the puck, has a high ceiling offensively. Not flashy, but McIsaac is steady, smart and doesn’t make mistakes.

Alec Regula

Pick: No. 67 overall (Round 3)

Position: Defenseman

Height/weight: 6-foot-4, 200 pounds

Last season: London (OHL) 67 games, seven goals, 18 assists, 25 points.

Scouting report: Played at Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood as a high school freshman, and has evolved into an intriguing prospect. Has a lot of range on the ice, and is considered a dependable two-way defenseman who needs to grow into his frame.

Seth Barton

Pick: No. 81 overall (Round 3)

Position: Defenseman

Height/weight: 6-foot-3, 174 pounds

Last season: Trail (BCHL) 49 games, six goals, 27 assists, 33 points.

Scouting report: Considered one of the better defensemen to come out of the British Columbia league, many scouts have compared Barton, a right-handed shot, to Chicago’s Brent Seabrook. Barton is committed to UMass-Lowell next year.

Jesper Eliasson

Pick: No. 84 overall (Round 3)

Position: Goalie

Height/weight: 6-foot-2, 198 pounds

Last season: Troja (Sweden), 12 games, 2.57 GAA, .931 SVS.

Scouting report: Good size goaltender who has had some real good statistics going up the system. Several years away from arriving in North America.

Ryan O'Reilly

Pick: No. 98 overall (Round 4)

Position: Right wing

Height/weight: 6-foot-2, 201 pounds

Last season: Madison (USHL), 45 games,  21 goals, 13 assists, 34 points.

Scouting report: A Dallas-area native who has size and an outstanding shot, but is raw. His speed and footwork need work, and hasn’t played consistently against top level competition through his career. Headed to University of Denver.

Victor Brattstrom

Pick: No. 160 overall (Round 6)

Position: Goaltender

Height/weight: 6-foot-5, 198 pounds

Last season: Timra (Sweden), 1.93 GAA, .919 SVS.

Scouting report: Has the size and athleticism, and his technically sound, but is raw and needs to tighten his technique. Second goaltender taken by Wings in draft.

Otto Kivenmaki

Pick: No. 191 overall (Round 7)

Position: Left wing

Height/weight: 5-foot-8, 140 pounds

Last season: SM-Iiiga, 37 games, 11 goals, 26 assists, 37 points.

Scouting report: A very long range prospect, Kivenmaki needs to grow physically, but has shown some offensive potential in the junior level.

NOTE: The Red Wings traded the 159th overall pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a fifth-round pick in the 2019 draft.
