An 18-month-old girl is in critical condition after she was hit by a car in Pontiac Wednesday morning, police said.

Oakland County Sheriff's deputies were called to the 100 block of Warwick Drive near West Walton Boulevard and Baldwin Avenue about 8:46 a.m. to respond to a personal injury accident, according to officials.

The caller told police the toddler had been run over by a car and was not breathing, police said.

Emergency medical personnel arrived and were able to get a pulse from the child, according to the sheriff's office. They then took the girl to a hospital.

Authorities said it appears the girl's mother was putting air into a tire of her vehicle when the child walked away and was hit by a neighbor who was backing a vehicle out of a driveway.
