Allen Park — The Detroit Lions announced defensive end Ziggy Ansah will open training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

It’s the second consecutive year, Ansah will start camp on the PUP list.

The move comes after his practice participation was heavily restricted during the early portion of the offseason program.

A first-round draft pick in 2013, Ansah fell just shy of matching the franchise’s single season sack record in 2015. The past two seasons, he’s been plagued by multiple injuries, limiting his effectiveness.

A late-season surge, which included three sacks in each of the team’s final two games, buoyed his stat line last year, helping him to finish with 12.0 sacks.

Ansah is set to play the 2018 season under the franchise tag, a one-year contract that will pay him $17.1 million.

In addition to Ansah, the Lions also placed rookie fullback Nick Bawden on injured reserve and wide receiver Andy Jones on PUP. Bawden tore his ACL in a June OTA.

To fill Bawden’s roster spot, the Lions signed linebacker Freddie Bishop.

Bishop spent the past two seasons with the New York Jets, appearing in five games in 2017 with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Prior to New York, Bishop played three seasons in the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders.

This is Bishop’s second stint with the Lions. He signed with the team as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Western Michigan in 2013.
