Report: Lions working out veteran LB Kelvin Sheppard

The Detroit Lions haven't made a transaction through the first several days of training camp, but general manager Bob Quinn always is looking for ways to upgrade his roster. On Tuesday, an off day for the players, the team is working out veteran linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, according to an ESPN report. 

A third-round pick out of LSU in 2011, the 6-foot-2, 249-pound Sheppard has spent time with four teams, most recently with the New York Giants.

He was re-signed by the Giants in the middle of last season, appearing in seven games, including six starts. The inside linebacker still managed to rack up 49 tackles during the stretch, also adding a pair of interceptions. 

The Lions currently have nine linebackers on the roster, but Sheppard's former teammate, Devon Kennard, is on the non-football injury list, while undrafted rookie Chad Meredith sat out Monday's practice with an undisclosed injury.

The Lions signed free agent offensive tackle Jamar McGloster on Tuesday. McGloster previously spent time with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Syracuse, where he played in 30 games with 24 starts.

In order to make room on the roster for McGloster, the Lions waived offensive lineman Adam Bisnowaty.
