Michigan legend Red Berenson makes U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame

Red Berenson, who coached Michigan to national championships in 1996 and 1998, has been chosen for induction in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, it was announced Thursday.

Berenson is part of a five-person class that will be inducted at the JW Marriott Nashville in Nashville on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. The other inductees are Natalie Darwitz, Leland "Hago" Harrington, David Poile and Paul Stewart.

Berenson was Michigan’s head coach for 33 seasons until retiring after the 2016-17 season. Berenson led the Wolverines to 22 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament from 1991-2012, the longest streak in college hockey history.

Michigan’s record under Berenson was 848-426-92 (.654), including 11 trips to the Frozen Four.

Berenson, 78, will be the sixth Wolverine inducted in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, joining Vic Heyliger (1974), Willard Ikola (1990), John Matchefts (1991), Wally Grant (1994) and John MacInnis (2007).

Berenson earned two business degrees from Michigan and three varsity hockey letters. He was an All-American and Michigan’s MVP at the conclusion of his junior and senior seasons, in 1961 and 1962.

Berenson still holds Michigan’s single-season record for goals (43) and hat tricks (nine).

Berenson went on to a 17-year NHL career with the Canadiens, Rangers, Red Wings and Blues. In 987 NHL games he had 261 goals and 397 assists.
