Lions stock report: Abdullah up, pass rush down

Oakland, Calif. — Here's a quick stock report following the Detroit Lions' 16-10 loss to the Oakland Raiders in the preseason opener for both teams. 

STOCK UP: Ameer Abdullah

The night didn't get off to a great start for Abdullah, who didn't step up far enough on a blitz pickup leading to a sack, but he bounced back with a series of efficient touches that ended in the Lions' only touchdown. He set the team up just short of the goal line with a 7-yard catch and punched it in on the next play, following a pair of quality blocks on the left side of his line. 

STOCK DOWN: Rolan Milligan

Milligan is in the mix for one of the final defensive back jobs, but didn't do himself any favors against the Raiders, despite leading the team in tackles. Early in the game, he was beat for a long completion down the sideline, then later fell in the end zone, surrendering the defense's only touchdown. 

TREADING WATER: Matt Cassel

Cassel entered the game with the slight edge in the quarterback competition and didn't concede any ground with a modest performance and one touchdown series. He had a chance to lead a winning drive, but lost a fumble when his pass protection badly broke down. 

STOCK UP: Hakeem Valles

Valles blew a block in the third quarter, but immediately made up for it with a downfield block that helped spring rookie running back Kerryon Johnson on a 19-yard reception. Valles also caught two passes, both for first downs. 

STOCK DOWN: Pass rush

The Raiders took their shots downfield, but the Lions managed very little pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. Defensive end Alex Barrett officially recorded the only hit of the game. 

TREADING WATER: Miles Killebrew

Killebrew saw his first action at linebacker, and while he didn't record a tackle, he was able to pounce on a botched snap, ending a Raiders drive in the red zone.  

STOCK UP: Kerryon Johnson

Detroit's unquestioned star of the evening. Johnson got plenty of snaps and showcased his vision, burst and elusiveness, making tacklers miss as both a ball carrier and pass catcher. His best run was wiped out by a holding call, but Johnson still did enough to get Lions fans excited about the future of the running game. 

STOCK DOWN: Tyrell Crosby

Crosby had a really nice block on Abdullah's touchdown, sealing his man off on the outside lane, but the rookie tackle's pass protection left plenty to be desired. He gave up a sack and a pressure on back-to-back plays in the second half and needs to continue to improve his footwork and balance. 

Oh, and that holding call negating Johnson's 57-yard romp, that was on Crosby. 

STOCK UP: Frank Ragnow

Detroit's first-round pick looked like he belonged, consistently handling his assignment though his first-half workload. His key moment also came on Abdullah's touchdown, when the rookie guard drove talented rookie defensive tackle P.J. Hall out of the way, clearing the lane to the end zone.
