Detroit PAL hosting 1968 Tigers celebration at The Corner on Sept. 5

Detroit — Fifty years later, the 1968 Tigers are returning to The Corner to reminisce about a World Series championship that meant so much to a city that, just one year earlier, was engulfed in flames and riots.

The Detroit Police Athletic League is hosting "Pros for PAL" on Wednesday, Sept. 5, with the highlight of the evening being a question-and-answer session with some of those 1968 Tigers.

Among the 1968 Tigers expected to attend are Willie Horton, for whom the field is named at The Corner Ballpark, and Al Kaline, among others.

The event is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the site of old Tiger Stadium, where PAL's new $20-million-plus headquarters now reside, anchored by the sparkling new playing surface that kept Tiger Stadium's dimensions and even its flagpole in center field.

VIP tickets, which include a private reception with members of the 1968 Tigers, are $100, and general admission is $50. Tickets can be purchased at detroitpal.org/event/pros-for-pal/.

Ticket prices include food, drinks, raffles and door prizes.

The Tigers also will hold a 1968 celebration weekend Friday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Sept. 9, for a series against — fittingly — the St. Louis Cardinals at Comerica Park. The Tigers will be giving away "Sock it to 'em" socks that Friday, a 1968 replica road jersey that Saturday and a 1968 replica pennant that Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at tigers.com or the Comerica Park box office.
