A new mother who'd given birth to twins just weeks ago was fatally shot in her home Sunday and her husband has been arrested, police said.

Authorities said the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the homicide of the 28-year-old Superior Township woman by her mother-in-law, who called 911 at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

The woman told authorities that her son told her that he'd just shot his wife at their home on the 1000 block of Ridge. The area is south of Cherry Hill and east of Godfredson. By the time police arrived, the victim was dead and her 26-year-old husband had left and taken the couple's two-week-old twins, said Derrick Jackson, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

Police then got a call from another relative of the suspect, in Van Buren Township, saying the suspect had shown up there with the twins. Van Buren Township police and deputy sheriffs showed up and arrested the suspect without incident.

The twin babies were not hurt, Jackson said.

Police have no theory as yet to a motive; the suspect is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
