Ex-Piston Kay Felder (Oakland) signs one-year deal with Raptors

Kay Felder's tour through the NBA's Eastern Conference continues.

The former Oakland University standout and Detroit Piston has signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Raptors for the three-year veteran minimum. He will earn $1,567,007.

This will be Felder's fifth stop since he left Oakland following his junior season and was drafted late in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft.

He spent one season with Cleveland, before finding himself a roster casualty following the Cavaliers' signing of Derrick Rose. Felder, thus, was dealt last October to the Atlanta Hawks, who waived him, and he was claimed by the Chicago Bulls. 

The Bulls cut him loose in December, and he was claimed by his hometown Pistons, who signed him to a two-way contract in January.

The Pistons in June told Felder he was to become an unrestricted free agent.

The Raptors are his fifth Eastern Conference team, out of 15 total.

Felder, 23, has played in 58 NBA games, mostly with the Cavaliers (and just two with the Pistons), averaging 3.8 points and 1.3 assists in 9.1 minutes. In 31 G-League games, including 20 last season, he has averaged 21.4 points and 5.9 assists in 32.2 minutes.

Felder attended high school at Detroit Pershing before heading to Oakland, where he starred as a sophomore and junior, particularly as a junior, when he put on highlight-reel shows in some marquee, nationally televised nonconference games.

As a junior, the 5-foot-9 dynamo led the nation in assists at 9.3 a game and averaged 24.4 points.

That convinced him to make the leap to the NBA, which finally paid off on an increasingly stressful draft night. At a viewing party in Detroit, flanked by dozens of friends and family in Detroit, Felder finally was drafted 54th overall by the Hawks, who sold his rights to the Cavaliers. He received a three-year rookie deal that guaranteed him $1 million.
