Detroit News predictions: Michigan vs. SMU
Angelique S. Chengelis, Matt Charboneau, John Niyo and Bob Wojnowski of The Detroit News offer their predictions on the outcome of Saturday's Michigan-SMU game at Michigan Stadium (3:30, BTN/950 AM).
Angelique S. Chengelis: The Wolverines will try to run the ball, although the Mustangs are ranked 80th nationally in run defense, giving up an average 153.5 yards a game. They’re more porous in pass defense and this might be an opportunity for Shea Patterson to continue spreading the ball around and getting everyone involved. This could be a long day offensively for the Mustangs. Michigan, 42-3
Matt Charboneau: Michigan’s offense was able to build some confidence last week against an overmatched Western Michigan defense. Expect much of the same this week against SMU, which is allowing roughly 460 yards a game. The Mustangs’ offense hasn’t been any better, converting just 4-of-17 third downs against TCU and completing only 46 percent of their passes. It all adds up to what will likely be another easy afternoon for the Wolverines. Michigan, 48-10
John Niyo: Michigan gets another tuneup for Big Ten play with the Mustangs in town. The game won’t be in doubt, but there’s still something to be gained offensively for Jim Harbaugh’s team. Michigan, 59-10
Bob Wojnowski: If Michigan’s offensive line truly is improving, and the defense truly is dominant, we should see a reprisal of last week’s blowout. SMU coach Sonny Dykes is supposed to be an offensive whiz, but it hasn’t been evident in the Mustangs’ 0-2 start. Expect Jim Harbaugh to keep pushing the running game, while giving Shea Patterson a bit more freedom to take shots downfield. The Wolverines still have plenty to work on, even as they work over an opponent. Michigan, 42-14
