Detroit auto show launches 2019 poster contest
Sarah RahalDetroit — Budding artists in high schools across Michigan have until November to submit their best auto designs in hopes of being featured at the 2019 Detroit auto show.
The North American International Auto Show announced the launch of its 31st annual poster contest Thursday.
The poster contest was created to engage Michigan high school students and encourage careers in automotive design, according to NAIAS. During the 2018 contest, NAIAS received 825 entries from 68 high schools.
"As chairman, it is very rewarding to me to see firsthand the creative young minds we have in our great state and be able to award them for their imaginative interpretations of our show," said Bill Golling, 2019 NAIAS chairman, in a news release.
The contest is open to Michigan students enrolled in grades 10-12. An independent panel of judges, including College for Creative Studies instructors, automaker designers and State Farm representatives, will select the winning posters.
Judges will award $6,300 in scholarships to 16 students in the following categories:
•Chairmen’s Award – $1,000; State Farm Award – $1,000; Designer’s Best of Show: Digital – $500, Designer’s Best of Show: Traditional – $500; Best Theme – $250; Best Use of Color – $250; Most Creative – $250; three first-place winners for each grade - $500; three second-place winners for each grade - $250; and three third-place winners for each grade - $100.
Winning posters will be displayed during the public show at NAIAS 2019 at Cobo Center from Jan. 12-27 and reproduced in the official NAIAS program and on the NAIAS website.
In 2018, a poster by Novi High School senior Sophie Markus won the Chairmen's Award and was recognized as the Designer's Best of Show.
Posters must be original artwork, 18″x24″ in size, two-dimensional and camera ready. The poster theme must be automotive related and mixed media suitable for reproduction as a poster is allowed, including computer-generated graphics. Posters must contain the following copy: “2019 NAIAS or 2019 North American International Auto Show,” “Detroit” and “Cobo Center.”
The entry deadline is Nov. 20.
