Detroit — Michigan State Police troopers and a chaplain riding along with them were attacked while trying to assist a man walking in the middle of Interstate 96 Thursday morning on the city's west side, police say.

Troopers responded to "multiple calls" about a man who was found walking on westbound I-96, near West Warren, at about 2 a.m., police said via Twitter.

When troopers made contact, the man allegedly started fighting with not only the troopers, but the chaplain for the state police's south post.

The chaplain suffered "a few minor cuts," and police arrested the suspect, who is jailed at Detroit Detention Center pending charges.
