Detroit Marathon closes roads downtown Sunday

The 41st running of the Detroit Marathon begins at 7 a.m. on Fort St. in Downtown Detroit.

The majority of the road closures will go into effect at 3 a.m. Sunday, when entry to a large portion of downtown won't be available. The closures, outlined in red on the map,  affect major roads such as Fort Street, Michigan Avenue, Jefferson Avenue and Lafayette. 

Jonathan Mott of Lakeland, Florida was last year's overall winner, finishing with a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, 53 seconds. Runners experienced 70 degree weather by the time Mott finished, conditions he said were not ideal for producing great times.

Russian Valentyna Poltavska took home the women's title in 2017 with a time of 2 hours, 49 minutes, 53 seconds. At 46 years old, not only did Poltavska pocket $4,000 for winning the women's division, but she also took home an extra $2,000 for winning the master's division (40+).

This year, runners will be dealing with chilly morning conditions as they run a race that traverses two countries, taking some into Canada via the Ambassador Bridge before coming back to American soil through the Windsor Tunnel.
