Memorial service for Detroit MLB pitcher Ken Howell is Saturday

Ken Howell, a Detroit native who went on to a seven-year MLB career as a pitcher with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies in the 1980s, died Friday at the age of 57 in West Bloomfield.

There will be a memorial service for Howell on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Ellis Funeral Home in Detroit, 22401 Grand River Ave. You can reach the funeral home at (313) 535-8800.

Howell went to Tuskegee University and was drafted by the Dodgers in the third round in 1982.

Howell, a right-hander, had a MLB career record of 38-48 with a 3.95 ERA from 1984-90. He appeared in 245 games, starting 54.

After his playing career ended, Howell coached in the Dodgers minor leagues from 2002-08, and for the parent club from 2008-15. Howell had diabetes but was regarded as a relentless worker on the Dodgers pitching staff.
