Recap: Michigan bullied by Ohio State in 62-39 loss

Game summary

No. 4 Michigan travelled to Columbus on Saturday looking to finish off its most successful regular season since the turn of the century. 

The Wolverines left the Horseshoe with one of the worst losses in program history, a 62-39 beatdown at the hands of No. 10 Ohio State.

The Buckeyes put up 571 yards of offense and Dwayne Haskins threw five touchdown passes. Michigan's defense failed to pressure Haskins in any capacity, and its secondary simply couldn't compete with the speed of Ohio State's receivers and backs. 

Losing linebacker Devin Bush, corner David Long and tight end Zach Gentry to injury didn't help, but by that point, the Buckeyes were already making a statement with them in the game.

Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson had a defender in his face for most of his 34 pass attempts, only 20 of which were completed. Two interceptions returned inside the 25-yard-line and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown played a helping hand in Ohio State bullying the fourth-ranked Wolverines, who never looked like they really had a chance.

Blake Haubeil's kick is fair caught for a touchback.

Tru Wilson runs for 5 yards on first down. He picks up 9 yards and moves the chains on second down.

Sean McKeon is cracked by Shaun Wade after catching a 2-yard pass on first down. Joe Milton throws a Hail Mary to Nico Collins for a 43-yard gain that puts Michigan at the 16.

Ohio State received an unsportsmanlike penalty after the interception, backing it up to the 19.

JK Dobbins runs for 1 yard on first down and 2 yards on second down. Dwayne Haskins finishes off the drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Parris Campbell, Haskins' fifth score of the game.

Shea Patterson is back in the game for Michigan. He's still under-throwing his receivers, though, and his first-down pass to Nick Eubanks falls incomplete.

Now Joe Milton is in at quarterback. He's picked off by Brendan White on his first pass, and White returns the interception inside the 5-yard-line.

Michigan defense can't keep game within reach

Jake Moody's kick goes for a touchback.

Dwayne Haskins fires to Luke Farrell for a 10-yard completion on first down.

On the next play, he tucks it and runs for 11 yards and another first down at the Ohio State 46.

Mike Weber runs into a slew of Wolverine defenders and just bounces right off; he gets down the Michigan 24 before getting taken down by his face mask. The personal foul will put Ohio State's offense at the 13. 

Weber spins forward on first down for a pickup of 8. He reaches the 1-yard-line and picks up a new set of downs on the next play.

Haskins kicks it to KJ Hill, and the buckeyes are back in the end zone. The touchdown pass is Haskins' 40th of the season, breaking Drew Brees' single-season Big Ten touchdown record.

Patterson goes out with injury, Peters puts Michigan in the end zone

Ambry Thomas is dropped at the 12-yard-line on the kick return.

Shea Patterson rolls out, tucks the ball, and runs for a gain of 6 on first down. Chris Evans steps through a lane and gets a new set of downs up the middle with a gain of 6 on second down.

Patterson is forced to get rid of it under pressure on first down. Karan Higdon finds a hole and rushes for a gain of 24 before getting pushed out-of-bounds at midfield.

Patterson somehow gets it away to Ronnie Bell, who pulls in the pass and gets across the line of scrimmage for a pickup of 11 yards.

Oliver Martin catches a swing pass, but it's going to be called back for blatant holding. It's now first-and-20 at the 45. Donovan Peoples-Jones draws a pass interference penalty on the next play, making it first-and-10 for Michigan at the Ohio State 30.

Patterson throws it low to an open Peoples-Jones, who's forced to come back for it. The pass is initially ruled a catch, but they'll review it. The ball appeared to hit the ground.

The pass is ruled incomplete. Second-and-10 coming up.

Patterson's second-down throw to Sean McKeon falls incomplete. He throws off his back foot and completes an 11-yard pass to Peoples-Jones and keep the drive alive.

Patterson is dropped for a huge loss on the next play, but Ohio State is flagged for a face mask penalty.

Injury: Patterson appears to have been hurt badly on the play. He went down awkwardly, and the Michigan team has surrounded its wounded quarterback. Not a great sign.

Brandon Peters enters the game and throws a tight spiral to Evans, who is stopped inches from the goal line. The play will be reviewed, but it's not likely to be overturned. 

Ben Mason plows into the end zone for a Michigan touchdown.

Ohio State slams door shut on Michigan comeback hopes 

Demario McCall is taken to the turf by Ben Mason at the 21-yard-line on the kick return.

On the next play from scrimmage, Parris Campbell gets to the edge and scores on a 78-yard touchdown run. Yikes.

Michigan pulls back within two scores with Collins touchdown

Michigan lets Blake Haubeil's kick go for a touchback.

Tru Wilson rushes up the middle for a gain of 4 on first down. Donovan Peoples-Jones pulls in a low throw from Shea Patterson on second down for a pickup of 20.

Nico Collins catches a quick pass near the sideline, going out-of-bounds at the Ohio State 38 for a gain of 13.

Patterson goes back to Collins down the right sideline on the next play, which is batted away but draws a pass interference call. First down for Michigan at the Ohio State 23-yard-line.

Wilson is stopped for a gain of 1 on first down. Patterson completes a 7-yard throw to Nick Eubanks on second down. Peoples-Jones makes a terrific second effort to pick up the first down after catching a screen pass to Patterson's right. 

Michigan ends the third quarter with a new set of downs at the Ohio State 12.

Ohio State 41, Michigan 19 (End 3rd)

Michigan continues to unsuccessfully put it on the ground, giving it to Wilson for no gain on first down. Collins appeared to have hauled in his second touchdown of the day, but it's ruled an incompletion. The ball didn't appear to have moved until long after Collins completed the catch, so officials will take a second look.

After review, Collins is given the touchdown. Michigan is back within two scores. 

Collins can't get int the end zone on the 2-point conversion. Michigan trails by 16.

Ohio State takes 22-point lead in two plays

Dwayne Haskins tosses it to KJ Hill for a 23-yard gain on first down. Mike Weber punches it in from 2 yards out. The Buckeyes have 41.

Patterson throws fourth interception of the season

Ambry Thomas returns the kick to the 20. 

Karan Higdon loses 2 yards on first down. On second down, Gentry drops his third pass of the day.

Injury: Gentry catches some contact to the head after failing to haul in the pass, and is now being tended to by the training staff. 

Shea Patterson is chased from the pocket, the ball is deflected while coming out of his hand while letting go of the pass, and Jordan Fuller comes down with the interception at the Michigan 25.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Michigan

Ambry Thomas, for some reason, catches the kickoff, which is heading out of bounds. Michigan will take over at the 8-yard-line.

Karan Higdon finds a lane and rushes for 14 yards on first down.

Chris Evans is dropped for no gain by Malik Harrison on the next play. Ohio State closes on Shea Patterson in a hurry, bringing him down for a loss of 3 with its third sack of the day. Patterson goes over the top to Jake McCurry with a throw that falls incomplete but draws a pass interference call. Michigan has a first down at the 34.

Higdon is stuffed at the line of scrimmage on first down. Nick Eubanks catches a 1-yard pass on second down, bringing up third-and-long. Patterson has Gentry over the middle between a pair of defenders, but the throw is just short, and the pass falls incomplete. Not a whole lot going right for Michigan's offense in this second half.

The punt is then blocked, picked up by Sevyn Banks, and returned for a touchdown. Buckeyes are up two scores.

Ohio State 34, Michigan 19 (4:41 3rd)

Buckeyes extend lead with field goal in rough drive for Michigan defense

JK Dobbins goes for 2 yards up the middle on first down. The Buckeyes rush to the line and catch Michigan's defense napping on second down; Dobbins picks up 9 yards and a first down before getting pushed out-of-bounds.

Dobbins has another 2-yard gain on first down, and once again, Dobbins moves the chains with a 9-yard run on second down.

Injury: Michigan defensive lineman Rashan Gary is down after the play and is being attended to by the training staff.

Parris Campbell catches a pass over the middle and gets up the right sideline, reaching the 5-yard-line for a 31-yard gain before getting pushed out-of-bounds by Devin Bush.

Injury: Devin Bush is face-down on the turf after pushing Campbell out-of-bounds. He is being carried off the turf when Fox returns from commercial. Not a good sign.

Tate Martell is bodied by Gary for no gain on first down. Dobbins gets 2 yards on second down, setting up third-and-goal from the 2. Dobbins can't get back to the line of scrimmage on third down. The field-goal unit will be out for Ohio State.

Blake Haubeil's kick from 19 yards out is through the uprights.

Michigan offense gets off to sluggish start in third quarter

Shea Patterson dances out of a closing pocket and fires wide to Nick Eubanks on first down. Karan Higdon has nowhere to go on second down, getting wrapped up after a gain of only a yard. Higdon is absolutely plastered by Shaun Wade while trying to haul in a pass from Patterson, which jars the ball loose. Michigan will have to punt.

KJ Hill's 6-yard punt return will give Ohio State the ball at the 42.

Michigan defense shows positive adjustments to start second half

Jake Moody's second-half kick goes through the end zone. First-and-10 for the Buckeyes at the 25.

Dwayne Haskins fires high over the middle on first down. Mike Weber is dropped for a loss of 1 yard on second down, setting up third-and-11. Parris Campbell is wide open over the middle, and he's brought down by Josh Metellus after an 18-yard gain that gives Ohio State a first down at the 42. Haskins had all day to throw.

Injury: Michigan defensive back David Long was hurt on the play and is being examined by the training staff.

Chase Winovich gets all the way around the edge in a hurry and chases down Weber for a loss of 1. Haskins throws to KJ Hill on a short crossing route, and Metellus makes a huge hit to break up the pass on second down. Michigan's edge rushers bring some pressure on third down, making Haskins force a low throw that falls incomplete.

Drue Chrisman's punt goes out-of-bounds at the 20.

Dwayne Haskins throws deep to Johnnie Dixon on the next play, and while it's incomplete, it draws another pass interference flag. First-and-10 at the Michigan 41 with 0:21 remaining in the half. Michigan then takes an illegal substitution penalty before the next snap. First-and-5 at the 36 now.

Haskins drops in a dime to Demario McCall down the right sideline for a gain of 33 that'll make it first-and-goal from the 3 with 0:15 left.

Haskins swings it out to Weber to his right, and Devin Bush gets to the open space quickly and knocks him out-of-bounds at the 2-yard-line. Tate Martell comes in at Ohio State; Michigan doesn't bite on the run-pass option, and it stops Martell short of the goal line.

Michigan scores second touchdown in 6 seconds after muffed kickoff

What a break for Michigan. Demario McCall muffs the kickoff, and Nate Schoenle recovers it at the Ohio State 8-yard-line.

Shea Patterson throws it to Chris Evans on first down. Evans is wide open, and he dances into the end zone. Touchdown, Michigan.

Michigan is going for the 2-point conversion. Patterson is sacked on the attempt, and Michigan still trails.

Ambry Thomas returns the kick to the 21. 

Sean McKeon catches a screen pass and gets 11 yards up the left sideline on first down.

Shea Patterson throws to Donovan Peoples-Jones on an out route on the next play for a gain of 7. Peoples-Jones gets to the Michigan 46 on second down with a screen pass that goes for 7 more yards.

Patterson's deep throw to Nico Collins on first down falls incomplete. Chris Evans is stopped for a gain of 1 on second down. Patterson throws incomplete over the top to Tarik Black, but the throw will draw a pass interference penalty on Damon Arnette. That'll be a 15-yard penalty that puts Michigan at the 38 with a first down.

Patterson scrambles and shoots up the right sideline on first down for a gain of 15. First-and-10 at the Ohio State 23.

Patterson fires it high and behind Ronnie Bell; the pass bounces off Bell's hand and is nearly intercepted. Nico Collins makes a beautiful catch while going to the ground with a man in coverage in the end zone. The 23-yard touchdown brings Michigan back within a score.

Haskins and Co. torching Michigan secondary

JK Dobbins takes it up the middle on first down for a gain of 1. Dwayne Haskins steps up in a closing pocket and shoots up the middle for a gain of 7. Urban Meyer, apparently feeling very healthy, wanted a flag thrown on Noah Furbush for hitting Haskins on his way to the turf. Meyer draws a 15-yard flag, making it third-and-17. Haskins' third-down throw to Chris Olave is incomplete but draws a pass interference penalty on Brandon Watson. Watson has had a rough game in coverage.

Ohio State will have a first down at the 30.

Haskins is run over by Rashan Gary and Devin Bush in the backfield fora loss of 4 on first down. Parris Campbell catches a screen pass and makes an incredible effort to somehow escape from the plethora of Wolverine defenders closing in. He breaks free and picks up 33 yards before getting pushed out-of-bounds at the Michigan 42-yard-line.

Dobbins goes for 4 yards on first down. KJ Hill gets 3 yards on a second-down reception. Dobbins moves the chains with a 4-yard run on third down.

Karan Higdon hits the hole hard on first down, shaking a couple defenders and getting to the Michigan 40 with a 15-yard gain.

Higdon takes it up the middle again on the next play for a pickup of 4. Evans has nowhere to go on second down, and is fortunate to get a yard. Third-and-5 coming up. Patterson misfires to Sean McKeon near the right sideline on third down. Michigan's offense looks completely off-balance.

Buckeyes take 14-6 lead with second touchdown of game

Dwayne Haskins targets an open Mike Weber down the right sideline, but the pass is a tad overthrown and falls incomplete. Haskins tucks it and rushes up the middle on second down for a pickup of 9. Haskins dumps it off to Luke Farrell on third down for a gain of 6 to move the sticks.

Weber loses a yard on a first-down run. Terry McLaurin catches a short pass and powers through a tackling attempt by Devin Gil to gain 12 yards and get the first down at the 45.

Binjimen Victor is open down the left sideline on first down; Haskins gets it to him, but the ball bounces off his hands. KJ Hill gets separation from Brandon Watson on a crossing route, and wins a footrace down the left sideline. He picks up 27 yards and Ohio State has it first-and-10 at the Michigan 28.

Weber rushes for 4 yards on first down. Freshman Chris Olave runs a great route and picks up his second touchdown of the game - and second of his career - with a 24-yard reception in the end zone.

Michigan goes three-and-out after getting great field position

The pocket collapses on Shea Patterson quickly on first down, and Robert Landers drops the Michigan quarterback at the 44-yard-line for a loss of 7. Chris Evans picks up 4 yards on second down. Donovan Peoples-Jones catches a pass going to the ground, 2 yards short of the line to gain. It's fourth-and-2, and Michigan is going for it.

Yikes: Michigan's offense jumps. The 5-yard penalty will force a punt. 

Will Hart boots it into the end zone. Ohio State will get it at the 20.

JK Dobbins catches a pass near the line of scrimmage and is wrapped up by three or four Wolverines for a gain of 1. Mike Weber gets the carry on second down and picks up around 8 yards. Ohio State defensive lineman Malcomb Pridgeon receives a questionable personal foul penalty, and that'll back Ohio State up 15 yards after the play. It's third-and-16. David Long punches out a throw to Johnnie Dixon near the first-down marker, and Ohio State's offense will be sent right back to the sideline.

The Buckeyes catch a false start penalty on the punt, backing them up another 5 yards.

Drue Chrisman's punt goes out-of-bounds at midfield.

Another Michigan drive stalls in the red zone, Moody makes it 7-6

Tru Wilson gets the carry on first down; Ohio State does a great job of making sure he can't gain the weak-side edge, and Wilson is dropped for a gain of only 1.

Shea Patterson swings it out to Ronnie Bell, and Bell makes a couple cuts on the right side to pick up 8. Ben Mason steps into the backfield, and there's not much that Ohio State's defense can do about that. Mason gets the first down with a gain of 3.

Patterson throws near the end zone to Nico Collins on first down, and the pass is incomplete. Damon Arnette is flagged for holding, though, and Michigan will get 15 free yards. It's first-and-10 from the Ohio State 38.

Chris Evans shakes and bakes through the middle on first down for a gain of 8 yards on first down. Karan Higdon is dropped behind the line again by Malik Harrison, who shoots a huge gap to get in the backfield and force a loss of 5. Patterson goes over the middle on a quick crossing route to Evans for a gain of 8 that picks up a first down at the 27.

Patterson pulls it from Evans and tucks it, heading toward the left sideline for an easy gain of 8. Higdon gets 2 yards to move the chains in the red zone at the Ohio State 18.

Patterson rolls out dumps it down to Higdon to avoid pressure and pickup a yard on first down. Higdon can't find much room to run up the middle on second down, as he gets stuffed after a gain of 3. That's the last play of the first.

Patterson fakes the handoff, rolls out, and drops a pass over the top to Zach Gentry; but Pete Werner makes a great play to punch it out while they go to the ground, and Michigan has stalled in the red zone once again.

Michigan defense gets ball back with quick three-and-out

Jake Moody's kick goes into the end zone for a touchback. Ohio State will get it at the 25.

Dwayne Haskins swings it out to Parris Campbell on first down, and he's absolutely blown up by Lavert Hill to force an incompletion. Ohio State took a holding penalty, though, so they'll re-do first down with a 10-yard penalty enforced.

Mike Weber takes it up the middle on first down for a gain of 4 on first down. Haskins throws deep to Campbell, but the throw lands pretty far beyond the target. Haskins is flushed out of the pocket, and he tries to get it up the sideline to Weber; the ball bounces off Devin Bush's helmet and falls incomplete.

Donovan Peoples-Jones calls for a fair catch at the 35-yard-line.

Shea Patterson is flushed from the pocket and finds Tarik Black over the middle for a gain of 15 that'll move the Wolverines into Ohio State territory and keep the drive alive.

Ben Mason powers it through the middle on first down for a gain of 3. Higdon meets Tuf Borland up the middle after another gain of 3. Patterson gives to Chris Evans on third down for his first carry of the game, and Evans hits a hole and makes a few cuts on his way to an 11-yard gain that'll give Michigan a first down at the 29.

Evans gets it again on the next play and gets pushed out-of-bounds after a gain of 3. Higdon is stopped for no gain on second down. Patterson rolls out and hits Donovan Peoples-Jones on third down, but it's 2 yards short of the first-down marker. Michigan will try a field goal.
