Pistons sign guards Kalin Lucas, Isaiah Whitehead

Salt Lake City — The Pistons are bolstering their roster at point guard.

It wasn’t a big splash like their rumored interest in the Dallas Mavericks’ Dennis Smith Jr. or the Philadelphia 76ers’ Markelle Fultz, though.  

The Pistons have added guards Isaiah Whitehead and former Michigan State guard Kalin Lucas on two-way contracts, a league source confirmed to The Detroit News on Tuesday afternoon.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania was first to report the Whitehead agreement.

Whitehead, a 6-foot-4 point guard, was a second-round pick in the 2016 draft and played with the Brooklyn Nets for two seasons.

Lucas, 29, is 6-1, 195-pounds and went undrafted in 2011. He's played in just one NBA game — in 2014-15 with Memphis — and has spent this season with the Stockton Kings of the G League, where he's averaged 22 points and 6.5 assists in 21 games.

Whitehead, 23, played in 73 games in 2016-17, posting 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists and shooting 30 percent on 3-pointers. He followed with 6.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists, with 39 percent beyond the arc in 16 games last season.

To make room for Lucas and Whitehead, the Pistons removed point guard Keenan Evans and wing Zach Lofton from their two-way contracts. The players can remain with the Grand Rapids Drive on G-League deals or can sign with another team.

The Pistons have three point guards — Reggie Jackson, Ish Smith and Jose Calderon — on their active roster. Smith returned Monday after missing 19 games because of a torn right adductor.
