Monday, Sept. 2

Triple-A Toledo

Toledo, Ohio — Ka’ai Tom hit two of the Columbus Clippers’ five home runs in an 11-3 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Monday (BOX SCORE).

Bradley Zimmer, Mark Mathias and Daniel Johnson also homered for the Clippers.

The home runs by Tom, both two-run shots, came in the third off Spenser Watkins and in the ninth off Austin Adams.

Columbus starter Mitch Talbot (3-3) picked up the win after allowing just two hits over six scoreless innings. Opposing starter Watkins (5-6) took the loss in the International League game after giving up five runs and six hits over 5⅓ innings.

Double-A Erie

Akron, Ohio — Jose Manuel Fernandez, Alex Lange and Ethan DeCaster combined for a shutout as the Erie SeaWolves topped the Akron RubberDucks, 4-0, on Monday (BOX SCORE).

Lange (2-1) picked up the win after he struck out one and walked one over three scoreless innings. Adam Scott (4-6) went 5⅔ innings, allowing three runs and three hits while striking out seven in the Eastern League game.

All four runs came in the sixth inning, including a double by Cam Gibson that scored Kody Eaves.

The RubberDucks were held scoreless for the 14th time this season, while the SeaWolves’ staff recorded their 16th shutout of the year.

With the win, Erie improved to 15-4 against Akron this season.

Single-A Lakeland

The Flying Tigers' season ended on Sept. 1. Here's a recap from the finale:

Clearwater, Fla. — Matt Kroon hit an RBI triple in the seventh inning, leading the Clearwater Threshers to a 3-1 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Aug. 29 (BOX SCORE). The Threshers swept the four-game series with the win.

The triple by Kroon, part of a two-run inning, gave the Threshers a 2-1 lead before Daniel Brito hit an RBI single later in the inning.

In the bottom of the first, Clearwater grabbed the lead on a single by Luke Miller that scored Raul Rivas. Lakeland answered in the sixth inning when Brock Deatherage scored on a wild pitch.

Michael Gomez (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless, two-hit relief while Lakeland starter Tom de Blok (2-13) took the loss in the Florida State League game.

With the win, Clearwater improved to 10-5 against Lakeland this season.

Single-A West Michigan

Dayton, Ohio —  Ernesto Liberatore hit a walk-off single with two outs in the ninth inning, as the Dayton Dragons beat the West Michigan Whitecaps, 5-4, on Monday (BOX SCORE).

Matt Lloyd scored the winning run after he entered the game as a pinch runner and advanced to third on a hit batsman.

The Dragons scored two runs in the seventh before West Michigan tied the game at 4 in the ninth when Riley Greene hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Wenceel Perez.

Reliever Matt Pidich (4-3) went two innings, allowing one run and two hits while striking out one to pick up the win. Jared Tobey (1-2) went 1⅔ innings, allowing one run and two hits in the Midwest League game. He also struck out two and walked two.

Single-A Connecticut

Norwich, Conn. — Marino Campana hit a two-run single in the third inning, leading the Lowell Spinners to a 4-2 win over the Connecticut Tigers on Monday (BOX SCORE).

The single by Campana, part of a three-run inning, gave the Spinners a 2-1 lead before Ceddanne Rafaela hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

The Spinners tacked on another run in the fourth when Wil Dalton hit an RBI single, scoring Alex Erro.

Connecticut saw its comeback attempt come up short after Eric De La Rosa hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Yoandy Rea in the fifth inning to cut the Lowell lead to 4-2.

Ryan Fernandez (4-1) got the win with a scoreless inning in relief while Ted Stuka (0-2) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game.

With the win, Lowell improved to 9-2 against Connecticut this season.

Rookie-level GCL Tigers West

The GCL Tigers West's season ended on Aug. 31. Here's a recap from the finale:

Clearwater, Fla. — Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run home run and had three hits, driving in three, as the GCL Tigers West exploded for a season-high seven extra-base hits in a 4-0 win over the GCL Phillies West on Aug. 29 (BOX SCORE).

In the top of the second, GCL Tigers West took the lead on a solo home run by Jordan Pearce. The GCL Tigers West then added two runs in the third and a run in the ninth. In the third, Carpenter hit a two-run home run before he doubled to score Esney Chacon in the ninth.

Josh Coburn (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while GCL Phillies West starter Jonas De La Cruz (0-1) took the loss in the Gulf Coast League game.

GCL Tigers West hit a season-high five doubles in its victory.

The GCL Phillies West were held scoreless for the fourth time this season, while the GCL Tigers West’s staff recorded their 10th shutout of the year.

Rookie-level GCL Tigers East

The GCL Tigers East's season ended on Aug. 30. Here's a recap from the finale:

Lakeland, Fla. — Frank Veliz doubled and singled twice, scoring a run and also driving one home as the GCL Tigers East topped the GCL Yankees West, 5-1, on Aug. 29 (BOX SCORE).

The GCL Tigers East snapped a seven-game losing streak with the victory.

Connor Perry doubled and singled, also stealing two bases for GCL Tigers East.

Up 1-0 in the third, GCL Tigers East extended its lead when Veliz scored when a runner was thrown out and Darwin Alvarado hit an RBI single.

The GCL Tigers East later tacked on two runs in the fourth when Cole MacLaren hit an RBI single and then scored on a double by Veliz to secure the victory.

Andy Santana (3-0) got the win with 1⅓ innings of scoreless relief while GCL Yankees West starter Denny Larrondo (2-5) took the loss in the Gulf Coast League game.
