NFL Draft recap: Lions bolster defense with linebacker, safety on day two

It’s Day 2 of the NFL Draft, and unless a trade changes their situation, the Lions will have the No. 43 overall pick in the second round and the No. 88 overall pick in the third round.

33. Arizona Cardinals: Byron Murphy, Washington, CB

Cardinals fans probably just happy they didn't take a third quarterback in two seasons.

34. Indianapolis Colts: Rock Ya-Sin, Temple, CB

35. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Oakland): Jawaan Taylor, Florida, OT

Rumored to be a mid-first round pick, the Jaguars now added Taylor and DE Josh Allen this weekend. Good haul.

36. San Francisco 49ers: Deebo Samuel, South Carolina, WR

Only one player from Justin Rogers 10 players to watch for the Lions on day two off the board, as Samuel goes to the 49ers.

37. Carolina Panthers (from Seattle): Greg Little, Ole Miss, OT

38. Oakland Raiders (from Jacksonville): Cody Ford, Oklahoma, OT

39. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Sean Bunting, Central Michigan, CB

This is the second straight draft that a Chippewa was selected, following TE Tyler Conklin to Minnesota in last season's fifth round.

40. Oakland Raiders (from Buffalo): Trayvon Mullen, Clemson, CB

The second Clemson player for Jon Gruden and the Raiders after surprising everyone with Clelin Ferrell going fourth on Thursday.

41. Denver Broncos: Dalton Risner, Kansas State, OT

There were incorrect reports that Denver was trading for this pick, but it turns out the Broncos were actually trading into the next pick instead.

42. Denver Broncos (from Cincinnati): Drew Lock, Missouri, QB

43. Detroit Lions: Jahlani Tavai, Hawaii, LB

The Lions surprised everyone in Allen Park and all the national experts by selecting a linebacker projected to possibly last until day 3 in the second round.

44. Green Bay Packers: Elgton Jenkins, Mississippi State, C

Everyone in the Lions media room scrambling to figure out anything -- anything -- about Tavai.

Another corner that the Lions could've selected.

46. Cleveland Browns (from Indianapolis): Greedy Williams, LSU, CB

Jones is the fourth Buckeye drafted, compared to still just two Wolverines.

72. Cincinnati Bengals: Germaine Pratt, North Carolina State, LB

73. Chicago Bears (from New England): David Montgomery, Iowa State, RB

The Bears replace Jordan Howard at running back with Montgomery, who will join Tarik Cohen in the backfield.

74. Buffalo Bills: Devin Singletary, Florida Atlantic, RB

The running back run is on, as Lane Kiffin's workhorse gets drafted.

75. Green Bay Packers: Jace Sternberger, Texas A&M, TE

Third NFC North tight end selected, after Detroit took T.J. Hockenson and Minnesota took Irv Smith Jr.

76. Washington Redskins: Terry McLaurin, Ohio State, WR

That's five Buckeyes with offensive guard Michael Jordan up high on the best player available boards.

77. New England Patriots (from Seattle via Carolina): Chase Winovich, Michigan, DE

Michigan's has its third draftee on the weekend, as Winovich joins Michigan legend Tom Brady with the Super Bowl champs.

78. Miami Dolphins: Michael Deiter, Wisconsin, OG

Three straight Big Ten selections.

79. Los Angeles Rams: David Long, Michigan, CB

Two picks after teammate Chase Winovich goes to the Super Bowl champs, David Long goes to the Super Bowl losers. That's four Michigan defensive players selected and four straight Big Ten selections.

80. Cleveland Browns: Sione Takitaki, Brigham Young, OLB

81. Detroit Lions (from Minnesota): Will Harris, Boston College, S

The Lions moved up seven picks in the second round, and also tacked on a sixth rounder to Minnesota, to draft Harris.

Former Lions fullback Cory Schlesinger announced the pick.

82. Tennessee Titans: Nate Davis, Charlotte, OG

83. Pittsburgh Steelers: Justin Layne, Michigan State, CB

The Steelers took another local guy after drafting Michigan linebacker Devin Bush in Thursday's first round.

84. Kansas City Chiefs: Khalen Saunders, Western Illinois, DT

85. Baltimore Ravens: Jaylon Ferguson, Louisiana Tech, DE

86. Houston Texans: Kahale Warring, San Diego State, TE

87. New England Patriots (from Chicago): Damien Harrison, Alabama, RB

Annoyingly, the Patriots get great third-round value with the former five-star blue-chipper.

88. Seattle Seahawks (from Minnesota via Detroit): Cody Barton, Utah, LB

The Seahawks ended up with the pick the Lions had at the beginning of the night.
