Ravenna, Michigan, native Donnie Tyndall is getting a promotion.

Tyndall, 49, is taking over as head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive, the Pistons’ G-League affiliate, a league source confirmed to The Detroit News on Monday. The Stadium’s Jeff Goodman was first to report Tyndall’s hiring.

It’s a big boost for Tyndall, who served as an assistant coach with the Drive last season.

Tyndall also served as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors 905 in the G-League in 2016-17.

Tyndall was head coach at Tennessee in 2014-15, going 16-16 overall and 7-11 in the SEC. He was fired after the NCAA notified Tennessee about possible violations resulting from allegations of academic fraud.

Prior to Tennessee, Tyndall was head coach at Morehead State from 2006-12 and at Southern Mississippi from 2012-14.
