Detroit News preseason college football Top 25 poll

The Detroit News
Michigan is ranked No. 7 in The Detroit News preseason composite poll.

In anticipation of the first Associated Press Top 25 poll being released Monday, The Detroit News did its own preseason poll. Michigan State beat writer Matt Charboneau, Michigan beat writer Angelique S. Chengelis, and columnists John Niyo and Bob Wojnowski rank their Top 25 teams here.

The first column is a composite ranking of those four, using the AP points system of 25 points for a first-place vote down to one point for a 25th-place vote.

Three of our writers tabbed Michigan as the No. 7 team in the nation, and that is also the Wolverines' composite ranking.

Michigan State's rankings ranged from No. 14 to No. 22, and the Spartans ended up No. 16 in our poll.

Defending national champion Clemson is ranked No. 1.
