Report: Lions to work out former Patriots receiver Dontrelle Inman

Allen Park — The Detroit Lions have a number of contenders fighting for the team's fourth and fifth receiving jobs, but will take a closer look at a veteran option who recently became available. 

According to the NFL Network, the Lions will work out Dontrelle Inman this week. He recently requested and was granted his release by the New England Patriots. 

At 6-foot-3, Inman provides good size. He also has extensive reps working out of the slot, giving him the versatility the Lions desire further down the depth chart. 

Inman, who previously visited with the Lions when he was a free agent, is three years removed from his best season, when he caught 58 balls for 810 yards with the Chargers.

Inman had two catches for 23 yards in the Patriots' 31-3 preseason victory over the Lions on Aug. 8.

Injury updates

With training camp breaking last week, the Lions conducted their first practice under regular-season protocol, with only the first 15-20 minutes open to the media. 

Wide receiver Marvin Jones and defensive tackle Mike Daniels were in uniform, running through individual drills, while several players remained sidelined. 

Defensive tackle Da'Shawn Hand, quarterback Tom Savage, wide receiver Tommylee Lewis, offensive tackle Tyrell Crosby, cornerback Teez Tabor, safety C.J. Moore and defensive ends Eric Lee and Austin Bryant didn't participate during the open portion of practice. 

Hand, who has been out three weeks with a left arm injury, was running on the sideline without his elbow brace.
