Recap: Strip-sack gives Michigan double-overtime win over Army

Game summary

Michigan didn't take its first lead on Army until the second overtime of Saturday's Week 2 contest, but in the end, that was all that mattered in a. 24-21 victory.

A cohort of Michigan defenders got to Army quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. in the latter half of that same overtime session to force a fumble that would seal up a victory for the Wolverines (2-0).

True freshman Zach Charbonnet rushed for 3 touchdowns and 100 yards on 33 carries, Ronnie Bell caught seven passes for 81 yards, and senior defensive back Lavert Hill intercepted a pass on the goal line late in the third quarter to start Michigan's game-tying drive. The Black Knights (1-1) forced four fumbles on the evening and made five tackles-for-loss.

Michigan comes out firing to start the second overtime. Shea Patterson sails a pass to an open Nico Collins in the end zone on first down. Tarik Black can't haul in a second-down throw that's not exactly on the money. Patterson's third-down throw is quite awful. Here comes the field goal unit. 

Jake Moody's kick from 43 yards is good.

Kevlin Hopkins is stopped for a gain of only 2 yards on first down. Aidan Hutchinson gets to the backfield with ease and wraps Hopkins up for a loss of 3 on second down.

Kelvin Hopkins makes a throw down the sideline that falls incomplete. Artice Hobbs gets the pitch on second down and reaches midfield with a pickup of 8. Connor Slomka is stopped after a gain of 1. Fourth-and-1 coming up. Army staying on the field.

Hobbs makes the line to gain by a yard despite getting absolutely leveled by Khaleke Hudson. First down for the Black Knights at Michigan's 46.

Army defense makes huge stop in own territory

Christian Turner is absolutely leveled on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Javhari Bourdeau on first down. Bourdeau is ejected and Michigan gets 15 yards added to the 6-yard run by Turner.

Zach Charbonnet rushes for 2 yards on first down and 5 on second down, making it third-and-7 from the Michigan 44. Shea Patterson gives to Charbonnet one more time, a 5-yard gain that'll give the Wolverines a new set of downs in Army territory.

First-down handoff goes to ... you guessed it, Zach Charbonnet. He gets 3 yards. Patterson keeps it himself on second down for a gain of 4. Patterson is now slow to get up. Charbonnet is tackled for a loss on third down, making it fourth-and-2. Charbonnet is again stopped short of the line to gain. 

Army will get it at the 43.

Connor Slomka rushes for 5 yards on first down and moves the chains with a 6-yard run on second down.

He gets it again on the next play, this time only getting ay yard. Kelvin Hopkins rushes for 3 yards.

Slomka's 3-yard run on third down isn't enough to keep the drive alive.

Go-ahead drive stalls deep in Army territory

Shea Patterson opens the drive with a 9-yard completion to Ronnie Bell. Zach Charbonnet is wrapped up for no gain on second down but moves the chains with a 6-yard run on third down.

Patterson misses to Eubanks on first down. Charbonnet goes for 3 yards on the next play. Bell is open over the middle on third down and Patterson finds him for a gain of 11.

Patterson goes back to Bell on the next play, this time for a gain of 12 at the Army 27.

Charbonnet rushes for 2 yards on first down. Patterson completes a 5-yard pass to Eubanks on second down. Charbonnet is stopped for a gain of only one on the next play, but Jim Harbaugh keeps his offense out there. Charbonnet is hit for a loss of 4.

Shea Patterson tucks it and scrambles for a gain of 2. Charbonnet is swallowed at the line of scrimmage by Kwabena Bonsu for no gain on second down. A third-down deep shot to Nico Collins falls incomplete but draws a pass interference flag, giving Michigan a first down at the Army 49.

Charbonnet is wrapped up for no gain on first down. Tarik Black catches a pass in the flat for a gain of 1 on second down. Patterson hits Collins on a slant for a reception that eventually goes 18 yards for a first down at the 30.

Charbonnet goes for a gain of 3 on first down. Patterson overthrows Nick Eubanks on second down, but hits Ronnie Bell on third down for a 25-yard gain. Michigan has it at the 2.

After an uninspired first-half performance by the Wolverines, Giles Jackson returns the second-half kickoff deep into Army territory ... and it's called back for a blind-side block.

Michigan will start at its own 13-yard-line. 

Zach Charbonnet is wrapped up after a gain of only 1 on first down. Dylan McCaffrey comes in at quarterback, throwing incomplete to Tarik Black. He comes right back out of the game. Shea Patterson is sacked on third down. Things could get very real very soon.

Connor Slomka rushes for 4 yards on first down and 2 on second down. Kelvin Hopkins is wrapped up for a loss of 1 on third down. He throws deep, Army's first passing attempt of the game, for an incompletion on third down, but Lavert Hill is flagged for pass interference. Army will have a first down at the Michigan 25.

Slomka dives forward for a gain of 4 on first down and 2 on second down. Hopkins gets 2 more on the ground on third down. Army will go for it.

Charbonnet breaks a few tackles on his way to an 11-yard gain on first down. Patterson drops a nice throw into the hands of Nico Collins for a gain of 15 that'll give Michigan a first down at the 34. 

The Wolverines have fumbled for the third time this game. Ben VanSumeren loses it on a carry up the middle, and Army recovers at the Michigan 40.

Army takes over at the 25 after a touchback.

Army fumbles the pitch on first down, Josh Metellus scoops it, and sends all of Michigan Stadium into a frenzy as he crosses the goal line.

Officials call the touchdown back, saying that Metellus' knee was down when picking up the ball. The call is wildly inaccurate but can't be overturned. Michigan has it at the 21.

Patterson has Ronnie Bell wide-open down the sideline, but the ball sails just out of his receiver's reach. Probably would have been a touchdown. Second-and-10 coming up. Charbonnet hammers forward for a gain of 5. Patterson throws to Charbonnet for no gain on third down.

After a false start penalty makes it fourth-and-10, linebacker Michael Barrett calls for a direct snap and throws a pass that's good for 25 yards to Daxton Hill. Michigan has a first down at the Army 33. Onions!

Nick Eubanks now makes a big play, getting to the 9 with a 24-yard reception.
