Eagles' Pederson was a young QB under Lions' Bevell – and Brett Favre

Allen Park – The NFL’s winding coaching tree isn’t just touching Jim Schwartz’s Lions past on Sunday.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson used to back up Brett Favre on the Green Bay Packers under Darrell Bevell, then a young quarterbacks coach on Mike Sherman’s staff and now Detroit’s offensive coordinator.

There weren’t too many snaps to go around after the durable Favre – Pederson threw 53 passes in four seasons with Bevell from 2001-04.

Bevell, 49, is actually about three months younger than Favre and two years younger than Pederson.

“We’d give him a lot of crap for that,” Pederson said about his coach being the youngest guy in the quarterbacks room. “Brett used to kind of step over him just a little bit and used to have some fun with Darrell.”

Like Favre, Pederson coached high school football in the south after retirement, before leaving Louisiana to reunite with Andy Reid in Philly, where he played one season with the coach, and moved with him to Kansas City as offensive coordinator.

Seven years after starting his NFL coaching career, Pederson was back in Philadelphia as head coach in 2016, an opportunity Bevell has not yet had despite nearly two decades as an NFL assistant.

“I think the world of Darrell,” Pederson said. “Hopefully one day he gets an opportunity to be a head coach.”
