Recap: Wisconsin stomps Michigan 35-14 in conference-opener

Game summary

Michigan was embarrassed by Wisconsin, 35-14, in its conference-opening matchup in Madison on Saturday.

The Wolverines gave up 489 yards of offense while Shea Patterson and Co. struggled for the third consecutive week and turned it over three times. Michigan was 0-for-10 on third down and controlled the ball for just 18:53.

Patterson's fumble dashes Michigan's comeback hopes

Michigan recovers an onside kick and gets it at its 44.

Shea Patterson throws incomplete passes on first, second and third down. Tarik Black saves Michigan with a 20-yard completion to the Wisconsin 36.

Patterson goes back to Black on the next play, incomplete. Cornelius Johnson hauls in a 3-yard reception on second down. Offensive lineman Jon Runyan somehow ends up with the ball and fumbles it.

Nico Collins picks up the first down for Michigan with a 23-yard reception.

Patterson's throw to Black in the end zone on the following play is initially ruled a touchdown, but is then reversed. Patterson turns it over on a fumble on the next play.

Michigan adds another touchdown late

Michigan takes over at the 31.

Christian Turner rushes for 5 yards on first down. Nico Collins is flagged for a 15-yard pass interference penalty on the next play, bringing up second-and-20. Shea Patterson throws up a prayer that's brought down by Tarik Black for a 32-yard gain.

Collins catches an 11-yard pass on the next play. The Wolverines get to the line quickly, and Patterson finds Collins again down the left sideline for a 32-yard catch at the Michigan 4.

A penalty on Wisconsin makes it first-and-goal from the 2. Hassan Haskins is dropped for a loss of 3 on first down. Shea Patterson's second-down throw is thrown out of the end zone. He can't connect with Nick Eubanks on third down but gets Michigan into the end zone with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones.

The ensuing two-point attempt fails.

Michigan defense gets stop in own territory

Bradrick Shaw gets his first carry of the game. It's a 42-yard run that'll give Wisconsin a first down at the Michigan 32.

Shaw rushes for 7 yards on the next play and 4 yards on second down. 

A false start makes it first-and-15 for Wisconsin from the Michigan 26. Nakia Watson rushes for 6 yards. Jack Coan's second-down throw to Brady Schipper is incomplete. Coan is sacked for a loss of 11 on third down.

Collin Larh's 48-yard field goal attempt is missed.

Michigan goes three-and-out after getting ball back

Shea Patterson completes a throw to Nick Eubanks on first down but it goes for no gain. He throws deep to Donovan Peoples-Jones on second down, incomplete. Patterson misses on a tough throw to Ronnie Bell.

Michigan is now 0-for-7 on third down.

Will Hart's punt is returned 11 yards by Jack Dunn to the Wisconsin 26.

Michigan defense keeps comeback hopes alive with stop

Wisconsin takes over at the 12.

Jonathan Taylor rushes for 4 yards on first and second down to bring up third-and-2. Taylor's third-down run goes for 9 yards to the Wisconsin 31.

END 3RD: Wisconsin 35, Michigan 8

Taylor goes for 5 yards on first down and 3 on second down. He's stopped for a gain of 1 on third down, bringing up fourth-and-1.

Wisconsin takes a delay of game penalty. Anthony Lotti's punt is returned 3 yards by Ronnie Bell to the 27.

Michigan gets on board with Patterson touchdown throw

Michigan takes over at the 25.

Dylan McCaffrey is hit hard while throwing on the run on first down, leading to an incompletion. Christian Turner rushes for a 2-yard gain on second down. McCaffrey rushes for 7 yards, but he's hit while going to the ground. Wisconsin's Eric Burrell is assessed a personal foul, giving Michigan a first down at its 49.

Burrell's hit is now being reviewed for targeting. Burrell has been ejected.

Zach Charbonnet gets his first carry of the half, a 3-yard gain on first down. McCaffrey's throw to Ronnie Bell on the next play goes for 13 yards and a first down at the Wisconsin 35.

McCaffrey goes back to Bell on first-and-10, but this time he's just lucky it's not intercepted. McCaffrey hits Sean McKeon for an 18-yard gain to reach the Wisconsin 17.

McCaffrey scrambles and takes an extremely hard hit to the head from Reggie Pearson. That's another ejection for Wisconsin.

Shea Patterson is in the game for Michigan. He throws a 6-yard touchdown pass to get the Wolverines on the board. The Wolverines convert a two-point attempt.

Wisconsin takes 35-0 lead in third quarter

Jonathan Taylor is back in the game for Wisconsin. He rips off a 10-yard run on his first play back, and then gets to the Wisconsin 34 with an 8-yard gain on his second run. On second down, Jack Coan throws a pass to—you guessed it—Jonathan Taylor, complete for a gain of 5 to move the chains again.

Nakia Watson gets 4 yards on the ground on first down. Garrett Groshek gets Wisconsin to midfield with a 7-yard run.

Taylor moves the chains with a 9-yard run on second down. 

Wisconsin takes a holding penalty on the next play, setting up first-and-20 from the 47. Garrett Groshek quickly erases the peanlty with a 23-yard runthat makes it first-and-10 at the Michigan 24.

Jack Coan's throw on first down to Jake Ferguson is complete for a gain of 11 yards.

Watson goes down at the Michigan 8 for a 5-yard pickup on first down. John Chenal rushes for 3 yards on second down. Taylor picks up a first down for Wisconsin at the 2-yard-line with a 3-yard run.

Chenal gets in the end zone for Wisconsin. It's officially a beatdown in Madison.

McCaffrey replaces Patterson, Michigan punts on first drive of half

Michigan starts the second half with the ball.

Dylan McCaffrey is in at quarterback for the Wolverines. He hands it off to Christian Turner for a gain of 6 yards on first down. McCaffrey's second-down throw to Nick Eubanks is complete for a gain of 9 and a first down at the 40.

Turner again goes for 6 yards on first down. McCaffrey's throw to Sean McKeon on second down should have been caught, but it bounces off his hands and falls to the turf. A third-down pass to Tarik Black is broken up by Chris Orr.

Will Hart's punt is downed by Michigan inside the 1-yard-line. Both teams receive a penalty, though, so they'll do this thing over again. The Wolverines can't catch a break.

Hart's second punt is fair caught by Jack Dunn at the 16.

Injury update: Per FOX's Jenny Taft, Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor has been taken to the locker room for treatment.

Watson rushes for 6 yards on first down. A.J. Taylor catches a 3-yard pass on second down. The Badgers then take a false-start penalty, making it third-and-8. Coan is sacked for a loss of 5.

Injury alert: Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor is headed to the medical tent.

Watson rushes for 3 yards on first down and Coan completes a 3-yard throw to Danny Davis on second down. Watson's third-down run is stopped for a gain of 1, bringing up fourth-and-3.

Coan fakes the handoff and throws over Quintez Cephus' shoulder for a 26-yard completion down the right sideline. Cephus went out of bounds at the 16.

Wisconsin's kick goes for a touchback. Michigan starts at the 25.

Christian Turner is stopped for a gain of 1 on first down. Shea Patterson scrambles for a 4-yard pickup on second down. Donovan Peoples-Jones draws a pass interference penalty on the play. Peoples-Jones then picks up a personal foul, so it'll be first-and-10 at the 21 when it's all said and done.

Patterson completes an 11-yard pass to Nick Eubanks on first down.

He goes back to Eubanks on the next play, this time for an incompletion. Turner catches a throw in the flat that's good for 4 yards. The target of Patterson's third-down pass is a mystery. He's pressured and overthrows everyone.

Shea Patterson comes up firing, hitting Tarik Black for a gain of 5. Ronnie Bell lays out for a 22-yard completion over the middle. He went full-extension on that one. It's going to obviously be reviewed.

The ruling has changed. It's incomplete. Third-and-5 coming up, where Patterson can't connect with Sean McKeon. Michigan will punt.

Hot start for the Wolverines. Shea Patterson scrambles, hits Ronnie Bell. Bell skirts up the right sideline for a 68-yard gain before getting pushed out of bounds at the Wisconsin 7.

After the big play, Michigan is forced to burn a timeout to avoid a delay-of-game penalty.

Patterson's first-down throw to Nico Collins is just overthrown. Fullback Ben Mason gets his first carry of the season, and he fumbles it at the 4. It's recovered by Wisconsin.

Wisconsin wins the toss and has elected to receive. The kick goes for a touchback.

Near disaster for Wisconsin on the first play, as a low snap leads to Jack Coan not being able to hand the ball off. He gets back to the line of scrimmage for no gain. Jonathan Taylor hits a hole for 7 yards on second down. Coan tucks it under pressure and dives forward for what appears to be a first down, but it's spotted just short. Now they'll review it.

The play stands. Fourth-and-1. Wisconsin is keeping the offense on the field at its own 34. Woo boy. 

Taylor plows ahead for 3 yards to move the chains.

Taylor then rips off a 6-yard run on first down. Josh Ross takes a personal foul on the play, adding 15 yards to the end of the run. It'll be first-and-10 for the Badgers at Michigan's 42.

Taylor bounces it outside for an 18-yard pickup on first down.

Nakia Watson gets his first carry of the game, going for a gain of 2 on first down. Jack Coan completes a 5-yard pass to Danny Davis on second down, bringing up third-and-3. The Badgers pick up a first down and reach the Michigan 3 with a 14-yard run by Taylor.

Taylor is stopped short of the end zone on first and second down. He gets in on third down.
