Recap: Lions escape Philadelphia with 27-24 win over Eagles

Game summary

Special teams miscues almost did the Lions in on Sunday, but a first-quarter kick return for a touchdown by Jamal Agnew wound up being enough to cover the difference in a 27-24 Lions win over the Eagles on Sunday.

Lions' defense gets huge stop to ice game

Carson Wentz throws incomplete to Zach Ertz on first down. His throw to Mack Hollins on second down is broken up nicely by second-year corner Mike Ford. Justin Coleman drops Nelson Agholor at the 45 for a 5-yard gain on third down. Wentz completes a deep throw to Sproles, but Sproles is called for offensive pass interference. It would have been a 19-yard completion. It'll instead be fourth-and-15.

Rashaan Melvin breaks up a throw to the end zone, icing the game for Detroit.

Nelson Agholor hauls in a 2-yard reception over the middle on first down. Kevin Strong bats down Carson Wentz's second-down throw at the line. Justin Coleman breaks up a deep throw to Agholor down the sideline. The Eagles are going for it on fourth-and-8. Wentz is taken down by Devon Kennard a yard short of the line to gain.

Lions punt on chance to ice game

Detroit will have it at the 25.

T.J. Hockenson catches a 1-yard pass on first down. Marvin Jones grabs his sixth catch of the day for an 18-yard gain. He has 101 yards receiving today.

Ty Johnson is wrapped up for a 1-yard loss on first down. Matthew Stafford's second-down throw to Kenny Golladay is knocked into the air and batted down. Danny Amendola makes a magnificent play to get two feet in-bounds to pick up 15 yards and a first down at the Philadelphia 42.

Kerryon Johnson falls forward for a gain of 2 on first down and is tackled for no gain on second down. Stafford underthrows a wide-open Jones to end the drive.

Sam Martin's punt goes for a touchback.

Eagles draw within 3 points in fourth

Jordan Howard is wrapped up after a gain of 2 on first down. The Eagles get a mismatch with Christian Jones covering Miles Sanders, and Carson Wentz drops a nice throw in to pick up 33 yards.

Sanders gets to the Detroit 40 with a 5-yard run on first down. Sanders cuts through the middle for a 14-yard gain on second down.

A wide-open Dallas Goedert drops an easy pass in the end zone. Darren Sproles goes up the middle for a 3-yard gain. Wentz overthrows his receiver on third down. Trey Flowers is handed a personal foul for roughing the passer, making it first-and-10 for the Eagles at the 11.

Sanders is dropped for a 1-yard gain on first down. Jarrad Davis is given a penalty for nearly killing Sproles on a second-down incompletion. It'll be first-and-goal at the 5.

Howard goes up the middle for a gain of 3. Justin Coleman makes a terrific play to break up a throw to Nelson Agholor on second down. The Eagles score an easy touchdown to Agholor on the next play.

Lions go three-and-out with chance to take three-score lead

Kerryon Johnson runs for 3 yards on first down and is wrapped up for a loss of 3 on second down. Kenny Golladay's third-down catch is ruled incomplete for having a foot out of bounds.

Lions' defense sacks Wentz twice, forces three-and-out

The Eagles will take over at the 25.

Christian Jones sacks Carson Wentz for a loss of 3 yards on first down. Damon Harrison sacks Wentz for a 7-yard loss on second down. Tavon Wilson forces an incomplete throw to Zach Ertz on third down.

Jamal Agnew rips off a huge return to give Detroit starting position at the Philadelphia 48.

Lions take 27-17 lead on first play of fourth quarter

Detroit takes over at the 25.

Matthew Stafford scrambles for a 3-yard gain on first down. Ty Johnson goes up the middle for a 3-yard gain on second down. Stafford flicks a throw to Marvin Jones over the middle for a 27-yard completion to the Philadelphia 42.

Johnson runs for 3 yards on first down. Nick Bawden hurdles Rodney McLeod on his way to a 10-yard pickup for Detroit.

Johnson is stopped for no gain on first down. A false start on Logan Thomas makes it second-and-15. Danny Amendola gets all the way to the 12-yard-line on a 22-yard reception. 

T.J. Hockenson nearly hauls in a touchdown pass, but it's dislodged in the end zone.

Agholor touchdown makes it a one-score game

Jordan Howard goes down at the Lions 45 for a gain of 2. Carson Wentz's second-down throw to Howard is dropped. He hits Mack Hollins for a 20-yard completion on third down that will keep the chains moving.

Zach Ertz hauls in a 6-yard pass. Howard is wrapped up for a loss of 1 by Jahlani Tavai. Some poor tackling by the Lions leads to an Eagles touchdown on third down. Nelson Agholor spins away from Justin Coleman and gets into the end zone to make it a one-score game.

Lions 20, Eagles 17 (4:15 3rd)

Lions' offense sputtering in second half

Kerryon Johnson loses a yard on first-and-10 from the 2. The Lions go play-action, and Matthew Stafford completes a 13-yard pass to Jesse James.

Johnson loses another yard on first down. Stafford underthrows Marvin Jones by just a touch on the next play, turning what would have been a big completion into third-and-11. Stafford misses Kenny Golladay.

Darren Sproles returns Sam Martin's punt to the Detroit 48.

Slay injured on Eagles' first drive of half

Philadelphia takes over at the 16.

Carson Wentz scrambles and throws to Mack Hollins for a 19-yard completion on first down.

Nelson Agholor catches a screen and dances up the right sideline for a 5-yard pickup. Jordan Howard gets 5 more on the ground on second down.

Howard goes up the middle for a 3-yard gain on first down. Wentz makes a poor throw to Zach Ertz that's nearly picked off by Darius Slay. He comes up holding his hamstring and is now being attended to on the training table. Hollins is flagged for offensive pass interference on a third-down incompletion. The Eagles will punt.

Cameron Johnston's punt goes out of bounds at 2.

Jake Elliott's second-half kick goes for a touchback. Detroit ball at the 25.

Matthew Stafford hands to Kerryon Johnson for a gain of 3 on first down. Johnson gets 6 yards up the middle on second down. Johnson moves the pile, picking up 2 yards and a first down for the Lions at the 36.

Graham Glasgow is flagged for a false start. It'll be first-and-15 from the 31. Stafford's throw to Marvin Jones isn't able to be hauled in in-bounds. Stafford makes a miraculous play to escape Malcolm Jenkins and is fortunate to not have his throw intercepted.

Matt Patricia is challenging that there should have been a pass interference call. The ruling stands. Third-and-15 coming up. Stafford throws a deep incompletion under duress intended for Kenny Golladay.

Sam Martin's punt is fair caught at the 16.

Detroit recovers second fumble in as many drives

Miles Sanders returns the kick to Philadelphia's 15.

Carson Wentz throws an easy completion over the middle to Zach Ertz on first down for a gain of 23 yards. 

Wentz reaches the Eagles 43 with a 5-yard run on the next play. He picks up the first down for Philadelphia on a 12-yard completion to the Detroit 45.

Two-minute warning

Nelson Agholor hauls in a short throw, fumbles it, and it's picked up by Darius Slay. Slay returns it deep into Philadelphia territory before getting pushed out of bounds near the 23 by Wentz.

Lions lead Eagles 17-10 after Prater field goal

The Lions run some trickeration, reversing it to J.D. McKissic, on first down. McKissic cuts through a handful of defenders and gets all the way to the 7 for a gain of 44.

Kerryon Johnson is stopped for no gain on first down. Matthew Stafford's second-down throw is overthrown, bringing up third-and-goal from the 7. A throw to Hockenson on third down is well defended and broken up.

Matt Prater's 25-yard field goal attempt is good.

Lions force fumble near midfield

Miles Sanders takes a first-down carry to the right for a gain of 2. He gets 5 on first down. Carson Wentz throws a 12-yard completion to Zach Ertz on third down.

Romeo Okwara knocks the ball away from Sanders on the next play, but it's recovered by the Eagles for a gain of 2. Jordan Howard gets 3 yards on a second-down carry. An encroachment penalty gives the Eagles a first down at the 39.

Sanders goes up the middle for a gain of 6. He fumbles on second down, a fumble forced by the retuning Jarrad Davis, and it's picked up by A'Shawn Robinson and the Lions.

Penalties disrupt Detroit drive

Detroit opens the drive firing. Matthew Stafford throws a 19-yard completion to Marvin Jones.

Stafford throws his next pass into the turf with an Eagle pass rusher hot on his tail. T.J. Hockenson then commits a false start. Stafford hits Ty Johnson on a screen pass that goes for no gain on second down. Stafford completes a 7-yard throw to Kerryon Johnson, as Detroit will punt for the first time today.

Sam Martin's punt is downed at the 10 by Mike Ford.

Agholor's third-down drop ends Philadelphia drive

Sam Martin's kick goes for a touchback.

Carson Wentz tucks it and slides for a gain of 3 yards. He's nearly sacked on second down but gets rid of the football before any Lion can get to him. Mack Hollins hauls in an 11-yard pass near the right sideline to keep the drive alive.

Miles Sanders hits the middle for a gain of 4. Wentz hit Hollins on a similar route to the third-down completion, but there's an offensive pass interference penalty. It'll be second-and-16 from the Philadelphia 33. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside catches a 10-yard pass on second down. Justin Coleman forces an incompletion on a throw to Nelson Agholor.

Lions take lead early in second quarter

Jake Elliott's kick goes for a touchback. 

Matthew Stafford hits Kenny Golladay for a 7-yard gain on first down. He hits Danny Amendola for a 2-yard screen on second down. Kerryon Johnson keeps the chains moving with a 2-yard run.

Stafford throws a 20-yard completion to Marvin Jones, who had to make a diving effort to haul in the pass. 

Kerryon Johnson is wrapped up at the Philadelphia 44 for no gain on first down. Stafford is chased all over the backfield before he eventually just gets rid of the ball on second-and-10. Golladay gets exactly enough yardage to move the sticks with a third-down reception.

Johnson goes up the middle for a gain of 5 yards on first down and gets 11 yards on second down, bringing up first-and-10.

Logan Thomas makes a nice back-shoulder catch to make it first-and-goal for Detroit at the 3.

Johnson is stopped just short of the goal line on first down.

Eagles regain lead with Howard touchdown

Carson Wentz opens the drive for Philadelphia with a 23-yard strike over the middle to Zach Ertz.

Jordan Howard plows ahead for an 11-yard run to the left on first down. He gets 6 more, reaching the Detroit 35, on the next play. He gets 2 yards on second down, bringing up third-and-short. Quandre Diggs makes a touchdown-saving tackle on Miles Sanders on third down, as the Eagles rookie breaks off a 9-yard run to keep the chains moving.

Wentz hits Nelson Agholor on a screen for a 4-yard gain. Sanders is stopped for no yardage on second down. The pocket collapses around Wentz on third down, forcing him out of the pocket and up the middle of the field for a 19-yard run. He's taken down at the 1 by Diggs. 

Howard gets Philadelphia into the end zone on the ninth play of the drive.

Eagles 10, Lions 7 (6:15 1st)

Agnew returns kickoff for touchdown

On his first return since getting benched last week against Los Angeles, Jamal Agnew takes Jake Elliott's kick 100 yards to the house. The Lions have a lead.

Philadelphia takes 3-0 lead on opening drive

The Lions win the toss and will defer. Miles Sanders returns Matt Prater's kick to the 24.

Carson Wentz throws incomplete to Sanders on first down but hits Nelson Agholor for a 7-yard gain on second down. Trey Flowers is handed a neutral zone infraction, giving the Eagles a first down at the 36.

The pocket begins to collapse around Wentz; he throws deep to Sanders for a 40-yard reception. Eagles have it first-and-10 at the 24.

Wentz's first-down pass is batted into the air by Damon Harrison. A'Shawn Robinson gets into the backfield and wraps up Sanders for a 1-yard loss on second down. Wentz overthrows Agholor on third down, but there's a pass interference flag on Justin Coleman. It'll be first-and-10 at the 11.

Darren Sproles is stopped for a yard on first down. Sanders goes up the middle for 3 yards on second down, bringing up third-and-6. Wentz throws behind Mack Hollins on third down.

Jake Elliott's 25-yard field goal is good.
