Recap: Late Coghlin heroics gives Michigan State 40-31 win over Indiana

Game summary

Michigan State had the last laugh in a tight back-and-forth contest on Saturday at Spartan Stadium, using a chip-shot field goal by Matt Coghlin just before time expired to skate past Indiana, 40-31.

Michigan State's offense racked up 442 yards and 300 through the air. Indiana's offense gave Michigan State a tough time, as freshman quarterback Michael Penix Jr. finished 33-for-42 passing for 286 yards and three touchdowns.

Indiana draws even with Michigan State in final two minutes

David Ellis returns the kickoff to the 22.

Nick Westbrook is the intended receiver of an incomplete pass from Michael Penix Jr. on first down. The Hoosiers take another deep shot on second down, with this one drawing a pass interference penalty on Josiah Scott. It'll be first-and-10 at the 37.

Indiana takes a false start before the next play. First-and-15. Scott takes another pass interference penalty on first down. It's first-and-10 from the Indiana 47.

Penix takes another deep, deep shot. It's incomplete again. Penix misses on a throw to Whop Philyor on second-and-10. Indiana picks up a first down with a 12-yard completion to Donavan Hale. 

Then Philyor is found wide-open over the middle for a gain of 19. It'll be first-and-10 from the Michigan State 22.

Elijah Collins rushes for 5 yards on first down and another yard on second down. Brian Lewerke hits C.J. Hayes for a gain of 7 that'll move the chains at the 33.

Collins gets 3 yards on a first-down carry. Brian Lewerke tucks it and gets to the Michigan State 44 with a gain of 8. 

Cody White straight up drops a pass that probably would have picked up at least 15-20 yards. Lewerke rushes for 2 yards on second down. A defensive holding penalty on third down gives Michigan State a new set of downs at the Indiana 44.

Collins rushes for no gain on first down. Lewerke again tucks it on second down, cutting through defenders until going down at the 30 for a gain of 14.

Collins is upended at the 26-yard-line for a gain of 4 yards. Another keeper for Lewerke on second down, no gain. Lewerke underthrows White on third down. Here comes Matt Coghlin.

Michigan State will start at the Indiana 26 after a penalty on Sowards' return.Elijah Collins picks up 16 yards on the first play of the drive, making it first-and-goal at the 10.

Brian Lewerke then hits Matt Seybert for an easy 10-yard pitch and catch. Touchdown, Michigan State.

Michigan State defense gets huge stop 

Stevie Scott III goes for a gain of 2 on first down. Michael Penix Jr. goes deep to Whop Philyor on second down; a perfect throw would have likely meant a touchdown, but it's just beyond Philyor's reach. Penix is sacked for a loss of 6 on third down.

Brandon Soward's returns the punt to Indiana's 29.

Indiana 24, Michigan State 21 (12:42 4th)

Michigan State goes three-and-out after Indiana touchdown

Indiana's kick goes for a touchback.

Cody White makes a terrific catch near the right sideline for a gain of 13, but it's reviewed to see whether White got his foot down, which they say he did not. It's second-and-10. Brian Lewerke's second-down throw is rushed and falls incomplete. He tries to fit it into an extremely tight window on third down, another incompletion.

Whop Philyor returns Jake Hartbarger's punt near the Michigan State 30. A penalty will start Indiana at its own 11.

Indiana takes 24-21 lead to start fourth

Indiana starts at the 20.

Stevie Scott III is tripped up after a gain of 12, which would have gone for a lot more, perhaps 80 in total, if not for a great play by Xavier Henderson.

Nick Westbrook is upended for a 3-yard gain after catching a pass to Michael Penix Jr.'s right. Whop Philyor takes an end-around and gets 6 yards before getting drilled by Kenny Willekes. Scott reaches the 47-yard-line with a 6-yard run to move the chains.

Donavan Hale catches a pass while going out of bounds at the Michigan State 35 for an 18-yard gain.

Ronnie Walker Jr. is stopped for a 1-yard gain on first down. The Hoosiers pick up a first down with a 12-yard completion to Philyor.

David Ellis gets 7 yards on a first-down reception. Scott is stopped for no gain on second down. Scott gets the toss on third down, goes left, and just barely reaches the marker to make it first-and-10 at the 13.

Penix completes a pass to Ty Fryfogle that's good for a yard. That's 20 consecutive completions for Penix.

END 3RD: Michigan State 21, Indiana 17

Penix goes back to Fryfogle to start the fourth, but he can't keep his feet in-bounds while pulling in a pass in the end zone. 

Hale makes a one-handed catch in the end zone. The Hoosiers have their first lead of the game.

Michigan State can't extend lead on first drive of half

Darrell Stewart's 22-yard return puts Michigan State at the 28 to start its next drive.

Elijah Collins gets to the right edge for a 19-yard pickup on Michigan State's first play of the half.

They go back to Collins on the next play for a gain of 3 and again on second down for a pickup of 4. Brian Lewerke's throw to Cody White on third down falls incomplete, but would have been negated for an illegal motion penalty, anyway.

Jake Hartbarger's punt goes for a touchback.

Michigan State defense gets red-zone stop to keep lead

Indiana will get it to start the half. David Ellis fields the kick in the end zone and returns it to the 21.

Stevie Scott III rushes for a gain of 2 on first down. Whop Philyor moves the sticks with a 9-yard reception on second down.

Scott then pushes forward up the middle for a gain of 6 on the next play. Michael Penix Jr. hits Scott on a screen pass that winds up going for 13 and a first down.

Philyor cuts through the Michigan State defense for an 11-yard pickup, then catches another pass and shakes some more tacklers for a 25-yard gain. Indiana has it first-and-10 at the 23.

Penix hits Nick Westbrook for a quick, 5-yard gain. Then he throws complete to Ty Fryfogle for a gain of 8 yards that'll make it first-and-goal at the 10.

Scott goes for a gain of 3 on first down but loses a yard on second down.

Michigan State comes up empty on drive late in half

Darrell Stewart steps out of bounds at the 30 on the kickoff. 

Laress Nelson and Brian Lewerke get a little mixed up on first down, leading to an incompletion. Elijah Collins is stuffed while trying to cut back to the middle for a gain of 2. Lewerke escapes from a closing pocket and gets a yard beyond the line to gain at the 41.

Collins is dropped for a loss of 4 on first down. Lewerke's throws to Collins on first down and Stewart on third down fall incomplete.

A 10-yard return on Jake Hartbarger's punt puts Indiana at the 13.

The Hoosiers will start at the 20. 

Whop Philyor pulls in a 5-yard reception on first down. Michael Penix Jr. throws a strike to Philyor on a hook route on second down, good for 9 yards and a first down at the Indiana 34. 

Ronnie Walker Jr. is stopped for a gain of 2 on first down. Penix's throw to the tight end Peyton Hendershot is good for a 5-yard gain, bringing up third-and-3. Penix fires a laser to Donavan Hale that's caught for a 7-yard gain, but a 10-yard pass interference penalty on the Spartans gives the Hoosiers a free first down, anyway.

Hale catches a 16-yard pass down the left sideline on the next play and then catches another pass that's good for 28 yards. It'll be first-and-goal at the 5.

Stevie Scott III gets a yard up the middle on first down. Indiana is called for holding on the next play, setting up second-and-goal from the 14. Penix gets it to Hale for a 7-yard reception. Kalon Gervin is called for the world's most obvious pass interference, which probably saved a touchdown, in the end zone on third down. 

It's now first-and-goal at the 1. Sampson James is stopped for no gain on first down. Penix keeps, rolls left, and reaches the pylon for an Indiana touchdown.

Brian Lewerke keeps it on first down and takes it to the Michigan State 36 for a gain of 8. Elijah Collins moves the sticks with a gain of 4.

Elijah Collins gets the handoff on first down, a run for no gain. The Spartans then commit a false start. Darrell Stewart hauls in a 7-yard reception to bring up third-and-9, which Lewerke converts by hitting C.J. Hayes over the middle for a pickup of 20.

Lewerke goes deep down the right sideline for Stewart, a 35-yard pitch and catch that'll put the Spartans at Indiana's 18.

Lewerke tucks it and runs for a yard on first down. Lewerke keeps it again on the next play, again not getting much. Third-and-9 coming up. Lewerke goes over the middle to a wide-open Cody White, a 12-yard gain that'll make it first-and-goal from the 5.

Lewerke's throws to Stewart in the end zone on first and second down fall incomplete. He does connect with Stewart on third down, though, and the Spartans again have a one-score lead.

Stevie Scott III shreds Michigan State's defense for a 19-yard run.

Scott gets it again on the next play, this time going for 7 yards to the 42. Michael Penix Jr. fires to Ty Fryfogle near the right sideline for a 16-yard gain to the Michigan State 26. 

Antjuan Simmons already has his second tackle-for-loss, drilling Scott in the backfield for a 2-yard loss. Penix is hit by Kenny Willekes as he throws, forcing an incompletion. He'll have Whop Philyor wide-open in the end zone on third down, though, and the Hoosiers have pulled even late in the first.

Michigan State takes over at the Indiana 40.

Anthony Williams rushes for 2 yards on first down. Matt Dotson hauls in a 7-yard pass from Lewerke on second down, but Lewerke's third-down pass falls incomplete. The Spartans go for it, giving La'Darius Jefferson his first carry of the game, but lose a yard.

Whop Philyor is tackled for a loss of 2 after catching a pass from Michael Penix. Philyor gets 6 yards on a second-down reception. Penix has the entire city of East Lansing chasing him on third down, and he's forced to just throw it away.

Coghlin misses field goal, Spartans come up empty on opening drive

Michigan State will start on offense at the 25.

Freshman back Elijah Collins opens the game with a bang, cutting through the middle for a gain of 12. 

Brian Lewerke rolls and throws opposite field to Matt Seybert, who gets 25 yards downfield to the Indiana 38.

Collins is dropped in the backfield by Micah McFadden for a gain of 3. Cody White nearly makes a circus catch on a prayer from Lewerke, but the ball is jarred loose as he goes to the ground. Lewerke throws complete to Trent Gillison on third down, but Gillison is short of the line to gain. Lewerke rushes to the line and keeps the chains moving with a 4-yard quarterback sneak.

Collins is dropped for no gain on first down. Lewerke's second-down throw should have been picked off and taken the other way for a score, but Bryant Fitzgerald can't reel it in. Lucky break for the Spartans. Lewerke is hit while letting go of a pass on third down, an incompletion.

Matt Coghlin's 43-yard field goal attempt is no good.
