USA Hockey in Plymouth to host sensory free game

Sunday's hockey game at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth won't feature the normal sights and sounds associated with the game.

There will be no loud music, no goal horns, and no bright lights when the U18 team with the National Team Development Program faces the USHL's Madison Capitols at 4 p.m.

U18 coach Seth Appert says "Sensory Friendly Day" was originally designed for families with autistic children.

"We wanted to create an event for young kids on the autism spectrum who could enjoy an elite, high-level sporting event," said Appert, whose mother worked with children with special needs, including autism.

"We're putting away all potential home-ice advantages like goal horns, bands and noises so the families can take their children to these (quieter) games."

The second annual game in partnership with Autism Alliance of Michigan will also feature a Halloween fun zone and giveaways, a costume contest and a modified concession menu with gluten-free pizza and other healthy options.

The U18s are 4-3-1 and will play the Michigan State Spartans at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing tonight at 7 p. m., and the Capitols on Saturday in Plymouth at 7 p.m.

Luke Tuch, a 6-2, 200-pound forward who will attend Boston University next year, leads the team in scoring with four goals and five assists in eight games.
