Michigan women's soccer team takes down Texas Tech, advances to Sweet 16

Freshman forward Danielle Wolfe headed in two second-half goals to lift 19th-ranked Michigan to a 3-2 victory over No 15. Texas Tech in an NCAA Tournament second-round women's soccer match Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Wolfe (Walled Lake Northern) came on as a sub and nodded in goals in the 63rd and 84th minutes.  Michigan (17-5-1) advances to face No. 2 North Carolina (20-1-1) in the third round on Sunday at Dorrance Field. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

"She definitely has as she puts it that killer mentality that comes onto the field and just wants to do whatever she can for the team," said Michigan coach Jennifer Klein said. "If that means scoring goals, she's definitely capable and willing to do it."

Junior midfielder Sarah Stratigakis gave the Wolverines (17-5-1) a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, slamming in a left-footed strike from 16 yards out.

Jayne Lydiatt (22') and Savanna Jones (89') scored for the Red Raiders (15-4-3).

Stratigakis atoned for a missed penalty kick three minutes earlier, blasting a left-footed shot into the upper right corner from 16 yards out to give UM a 1-0 lead. The goal, which was assisted by Raleigh Loughman, was Stratigakis' seventh of the season. She's the team's leading scorer with seven goals and 12 assists.

Texas Tech's Lydiatt leveled it, heading a short corner past Michigan goalkeeper Hillary Beall.

The match was deadlocked 1-1 at halftime.

Wolfe, who played her amateur soccer with Michigan Jaguars FC and 2001 Girls Green, broke the stalemate less than a minute after coming off the bench, redirecting Brooke Cilley's pinpoint cross from the left flank. Samantha Devechecchi also drew an assist.

The West Bloomfield freshman's second goal came two minutes after she re-entered the match for midfielder Hannah Blake. Defender Skylar Anderson set up Wolfe's header, which gave the Wolverines a two-goal advantage before Jones pulled Texas Tech back to within one with a minute left.

Wolfe has seven goals and an assist.

Michigan is one victory shy of matching its program-record 18 wins in 2013.
