Game summary

The Lions on Sunday blew a chance to earn a win over one of the league's bottom-dwellers, as Jeff Driskel's interception with under two minutes remaining let Washington celebrate on its home field, as Dustin Hopkins put home the winning field goal to beat Detroit, 19-16.

Jeff Driskel steps up and fires complete to Danny Amendola for an 11-yard gain on first down.

Driskel's pass to Kenny Golladay on a crossing route is blown up for a 1-yard gain on the next play. Driskel tries to throw the ball out of bounds on second down, and it falls right into the arms of Jimmy Moreland—for an incompletion. That was an easy pick 6 dropped by Moreland.

Driskel is intercepted on the next play, though. Washington has it at the Detroit 46.

Washington takes over at its own 22 after a penalty on the punt return.

Dwayne Haskins dumps it off to Adrian Peterson on first down, and he shoots up the field to the Washington 44 for a gain of 22.

Haskins goes to Terry McLaurin on the next play for a pickup of 15.

Peterson runs to the 35 for a gain of 6 on first down. Wendell Smallwood catches a 3-yard pass out of the backfield on second down. Peterson moves the chains with a 2-yard run on third down. 

Injury alert: Lions DT Damon Harrison was hurt on the play and is being attended to by the training staff.

Steven Sims, who has a kickoff return touchdown today, gets the ball in his hands and loads up to throw on the next play, but ends up being forced to get rid of it. Guice rushes for 6 yards on second down. Haskins' throw to McLaurin in the end zone on third down misses the mark.

Dustin Hopkins ties the game with a 42-yard field goal.

The opening play of Washington's drive is called back for holding, setting up first-and-20 at the Washington 12.

Derrius Guice rushes for 3 yards on first down. Will Harris makes an excellent play on second down to knock Kelvin Harmon out of bounds and force an incompletion. Haskins' throw on third down goes about 65 yards but lands just beyond Harmon and can't be caught.

Bo Scarbrough breaks free for 25 yards on first down, but it's called back for a holding penalty on Rick Wagner.

Ty Johnson runs for 6 yards on first down. Jeff Driskel's second-down pass to T.J. Hockenson falls incomplete. The Lions' third-down play goes nowhere, but even if it had, there was a penalty.  They'll punt.

Trey Quinn fields Sam Martin's punt at the 22 and is immediately met by Dee Virgin.

Washington takes over at the 25.

Dwayne Haskins opens the drive firing, hitting Kelvin Harmon for a 26-yard gain and moving Washington into Lions territory at the 49.

Derrius Guice is wrapped up for a loss of 1 on first down. He runs for 5 on second down. Dwayne Haskins is intercepted on third down by Lions rookie Amani Oruwariye at the Detroit 35.

Prater gives Lions 16-13 lead early in fourth

Bo Scarbrough moves Detroit to the Washington 43 on a 7-yard run on first down. Jeff Driskel has Marvin Jones wide open in the end zone on second down, but Jones' outstretched arms aren't enough to haul in the throw. Driskel goes back to Jones on third down for an 8-yard completion.

Driskel takes off for an 11-yard run on first down, giving the Lions another first down at the Washington 24.

Scarbrough rushes for 5 yards on first down. Kenny Wiggins takes a holding penalty on second down, setting up second-and-15. Kenny Golladay catches a 9-yard pass. Driskel keeps the drive alive with a 12-yard completion to Logan Thomas. It'll be first-and-goal at the 8.

Driskel is nearly sacked, escapes, nearly sacked again, backs up, and throws the ball away safely. Scarbrough weaves his way to the 3 on second down. Driskel's throw to Jones in the end zone is beyond the mark.

Washington takes over at the 21.

Adrian Peterson rushes for 2 yards on first down. Darius Slay makes a nice play to defend a sideline throw to Terry McLaurin on second down. Jarrad Davis picks up his second sack of the season on third down, crushing Haskins for a loss of 9.

Danny Amendola returns the Washington punt 15 yards to midfield.

Penalties set back Lions on third-quarter drive

Bo Scarbrough pounds his way ahead to the 10-yard-line for a gain of 8 to give Detroit some breathing room. He moves the chains on the next play with a gain of 4.

Jeff Driskel's throw to Marvin Jones on first down is broken up Jimmy Moreland. Scarbrough is dropped for a loss of 3 on second down. Driskel dumps it off to J.D. McKissic quickly on third down, and McKissic cuts his way through the Washington defense for a gain of 17 yards. It's first-and-10 at the 28.

Driskel takes off on first down and reaches the Detroit 39 for a gain of 11.

McKissic is handed a face-mask penalty on first down, setting up first-and-25. Driskel hits Marvin Jones for a gain of 5 on first down and runs for 5 yards on second down. He's sacked for zero yards on third down.

Sam Martin's punt is fair caught at the Washington 21.

Derrius Guice is hit by Will Harris on a 1-yard run on first down, and Harris is flagged for lowering his head while initiating contact. That's a 15-yard penalty, giving Washington a first down at the 41.

Justin Coleman blows up Dwayne Haskins while he gets rid of a throw to Terry McLaurin that's forced incomplete. Guice rushes for 3 yards on second down, but can't haul in Haskins' throw on third down.

Marvin Hall fields the punt at his own 1-yard-line and is wrapped up at the 2. Not a great decision.

Lions tie Washington at 13 on opening drive of half

The Lions will start at the 25.

Bo Scarbrough gets the handoff on first down, bouncing it to the right and cutting back inside for an 11-yard gain. 

Scarbrough rushes for 2 yards on the next play. Scarbrough gets to the right sideline effortlessly on second down and shoots down the field for a 30-yard gain, giving the Lions a first down at the Washington 32.

Jeff Driskel is pushed out of bounds for no gain on first down. Ty Johnson picks up 5 yards on second down. Jesse James catches a pass near the left sideline for 7 yards and a first down.

The Lions take a delay-of-game penalty before the next play, setting up first-and-15 at the Washington 25.

Driskel connects with Marvin Jones on the next play, a pickup of 11. Driskel runs for 2 yards on second down to set up third-and-2. The Lions catch the Redskins off-guard with play-action, and Driskel finds Logan Thomas in the end zone for an easy touchdown.

Driskel immediately has a man in his face on the next play, and he's forced to dump it off quickly for a gain of 2 to Danny Amendola. Scarbrough moves the sticks with an 8-yard run on second down.

Haskins' deep throw to Terry McLaurin on first down falls incomplete. Derrius Guice is wrapped up by Romeo Okwara for no gain on second down. The pocket collapses immediately around Haskins on third down, but he takes off for a gain of 18 that gives the Redskins a first down at the Detroit 41.

McLaurin catches a pass for 4 yards on first down. Peterson is dropped for a 3-yard loss on second down. Haskins connects with McLaurin for a gain of 10 on third down, laughing once again in the face of Detroit's third-and-long defense.

Guice goes up the middle for a gain of 6 on first down. Haskins finds Kelvin Harmon for a terrific one-handed catch that's good for 12 yards.
