Wintry weekend weather leaves 150K+ without power in Mich.

Gaylord – Swaths of Michigan residents are without power as the work week starts after winter weather struck again Sunday in mid-Michigan.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings and advisories Sunday for over two dozen counties in the western and northern parts of the state.

Great Lakes Energy reports more than 125,000 are without power, mostly north of Grand Rapids and west of Midland. Sunday snowfall in the area ranged considerably – there were reports of 10 inches in Walhalla, near Ludington. In the Grand Rapids area, about 4.5 inches were reported.

In the Midland area, freezing rain likely was the culprit for widespread outages. Consumers Energy says nearly 30,000 are without power Monday morning, and it expects to have it restored by midnight.

The wintry weather could continue into Monday. The National Weather Service says the day will start at or below freezing in much of the state, so areas with precipitation could see icy spots. Those temperatures are forecast to rise, however, as cloud cover clears.

It will be no match for the storm in the Northeast, however. A nor'easter is dumping nearly two feet of snow from Pennsylvania to Maine.
