NHL draft Day 2 recap: Thirteen NTDP players selected; Kris Draper's son picked by Wings

Thirteen players and two alumni from the National Team Development Program in Plymouth were selected in the 2020 NHL draft.

A day after U18 captain and defenseman Jake Sanderson was taken fifth overall in the first round, the NTDP had four players taken in a row during the second round.

Defenseman Tyler Kleven was selected by Ottawa (No. 44), defenseman Brock Faber was picked by the L.A. Kings (No. 45), goalie Drew Commesso was taken by Chicago (No. 46) and winger Luke Tuch was drafted by Montreal (No. 47).

Earlier in the second round, NTDP center Thomas Bordeleau was selected by San Jose with the 38th pick.

Last year, a record-setting 17 NTDP players were taken in the 2019 draft, including eight in the first round, 24 with NTDP ties and four consecutive players were selected in the first round with picks 12-15 (Matthew Boldy, Spencer Knight, Cam York, Cole Caufield).

This year, the NTDP picks in the third round were center Ty Smilanic (Florida, No. 74), winger Landon Slaggert (Chicago, No. 78) and center Dylan Peterson (St. Louis No. 86).

In the fourth round, defenseman Eamon Powell was taken by Tampa Bay (No. 116th).

In the fifth round, winger Brett Berard was drafted by the Rangers (No. 134) and Fort Gratiot's Jacob Truscott was selected by Vancouver (No. 144).

In the sixth round, center Chase Yoder was picked by Vancouver (No. 170).

In addition, alums Sean Farrell was selected by Montreal (No. 124) and Ryder Rolston of Birmingham went to Colorado (No. 139).

Three players who appeared in at least one game with the NTDP were also drafted: Ian Moore to Anaheim in the third round, Blake Biondi to Montreal in the fourth round and Kienan Draper to Detroit in the seventh round.

Thomas Bordeleau committed to play at the University of Michigan this season.

Wings pick three straight Swedes

The Detroit Red Wings drafted Swedish defenseman William Wallinder with the first pick of the second round on Wednesday morning.

Wallinder (6'4", 191 pounds) had five goals and 19 assists in 37 games with Modo's junior team and was a member of Sweden's bronze-medal winning team at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

The Wings drafted center Theodor Niederbach with Frolunda, a teammate of first-round pick Lucas Raymond with the 51st pick and they took Portland winger Cross Hanas with the 55th pick. Niederbach, 5'11", 175 pounds, had three goals and 12 points in nine games. Hanas, 6'1", 165 pounds, is from Texas and had 22 goals and 49 points in 60 games with the Winterhawks.

In the third round, the Wings drafted Kitchener defenseman Donovan Sebrango with the 63rd pick. Detroit traded the 65th pick to Minnesota for the 70th and 132nd picks. With the 70th pick, the Wings took Finnish defenseman Eemil Viro.

Sebrango is a 6'1", 190-pound defenseman who had six goals and 24 points in 56 games last year. Viro is 6'0", 165 pounds and had three assists in 29 games in the Finnish Elite League and six points in 15 games with the junior club.

Kitchener defenseman Donovan Sebrango was taken in the third round by the Detroit Red Wings.

In the fourth round, Detroit took Wisconsin winger Sam Stange (97th) and Czech Republic goalie Jan Bednar (107th). Stange is 6'1", 200 pounds and scored 24 goals in 44 games with Sioux City in the USHL. Bednar is 6'4", 195 pounds with a 4.39 GAV in 13 games with HC Energie Karlovy Vary.

In the fifth round, the Wings took Lethbridge defenseman Alex Cotton. He's 6'3", 185 pounds and had 20 goals and 67 points in 63 games.

In the sixth round, Detroit picked 5'11", 165-pound defenseman Kyle Aucoin of the Tri-City Storm of the USHL. Aucoin, who will attend Harvard, had two goals and 13 points in 48 games.

In the seventh round, the Red Wings took Kris Draper's son, Kienan. Kienan Draper is a 6'1", 180-pound winger who scored 26 goals with 51 points in 56 games with St. Andrew's College (CAHS). 

Detroit also acquired the 203rd pick from the Blues in exchange for a seventh-round pick in 2021. The Wings then drafted 6'0", 190-pound winger Chase Bradley of Sioux City (USHL). He had seven goals and 19 points in 34 games with the Omaha.

William Wallinder was the Red Wings' first pick of the second round.

Rochester's Gruden traded

Rochester's Jonathan Gruden was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins before the second round of the NHL draft got underway.

The Penguins acquired Gruden and a 2020 second-round pick from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for goaltender Matt Murray.

Gruden, who played two years with the National Team Development Program in Plymouth, had 30 goals and 36 assists in 59 games with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.
