Michigan fell on its face in the first matchup with Mel Tucker's Michigan State Spartans, struggling to get anything going on offense and getting embarrassed freshman Michigan State wide receiver Ricky White as the Spartans picked up a 27-24 win at Michigan Stadium on Saturday.

Michigan's comeback attempt falls short against Spartans

Michigan takes over at the 7 after a penalty on the kickoff. The Wolverines trail by 10 with just over 5 mintues to go.

Ronnie Bell hauls in a pass over the middle and runs to the 20 for a gain fo 13. 

Joe Milton's throw is into multiple defenders, tipped, and incomplete. Blake Corum catches a screen and goes for 4 yards. Milton goes back to Bell on third down, an incompletion. Milton takes off for a 6-yard run on third down to barely move the chains.

A substitution infraction the Spartans makes it first-and-5 at the 30. Milton takes off for a gain of 9 on the next play to the Michigan 44.

A first-down throw to Zach Charbonnet misses. Nick Eubanks hauls in a 5-yard throw on second down. Charbonnet keeps the chains moving on a 6-yard reception to the Michigan State 45. 

Roman Wilson is the next man up, hauling in a 4-yard reception on first down. Milton keeps the chains moving with an 11-yard run on the next play. It's first-and-10 at the 30.

Erick All hauls in the next two throws, pickups of 5 and 8 yards that give Michigan a new set of downs at the Spartan 17.

Milton tries to escape on first down but is met at the line of scrimmage for no gain. Bell can't hold onto a throw to the end zone on second down. Cornelius Johnson catches a pass and gets down to the 1-yard-line.

Chris Evans is stopped for a loss of 1 on first down.

Michigan State recovers the onside kick. Turns out the timeout taken before Michigan's touchdown was not taken by Michigan, but rather, the officials. 

Michigan stops the clock three times and the Spartans have it fourth-and-2 with 0:23 left.

Michigan State takes 10-point lead with 5:11 to play

Michigan State takes over at the 8-yard-line. The Spartans lead 20-17 with 9:48 to go in this one.

Jordon Simmons rushes for 5 yards on first down. Jayden Reed takes a jet sweep for 2 yards on second down. Reed then comes down with an 18-yard catch on third down.

The ball was actually incomplete, but the referees let it play on, anyway. First down, Spartans.

Nailor is the target on a first-down incompletion. Simmons rushes for 3 yards on second down. Ricky White hauls in a 15-yard pass on third down to keep the chains moving.

Cade McDonald catches passes on the next two plays, pickups of 8 and 7 yards. It's first-and-10 at the Michigan 34.

Michigan State keeps up the tempo, and White makes a terrific catch from his back at the 3. It's first-and-goal.

A clipping penalty on Michigan State makes it first-and-goal at the 18. Two plays later, it's a Michigan State touchdown from Connor Heyward.

The Spartans lead by 10.

Michigan's offense continues to sputter in crunch time

Michigan takes over at the 23. The Wolverines trail, 20-17, with 13:21 to go in the game.

Blake Corum rushes for no gain on first down. Joe Milton dumps it off to Corum as a screen, and the freshman back dips and dives his way to a 13-yard gain to the Michigan 36.

Giles Jackson gets it quickly and is dropped for a loss of 3 on first down. Milton hits Cornelius Johnson on the next play for a 5-yard completion, then connects with Ronnie Bell on third down after escaping the pocket for a gain of 12 that keeps the chains moving. It's first-and-10 at the 50.

Milton's first-down throw is batted at the line of scrimmage. Zach Charbonnet is stopped for a gain of only 1 on second down. Milton's throw on third-and-long is incomplete. Michigan's sideline loses is mind, as Mike Sainristil had a defender draped all over him.

Michigan State 20, Michigan 17 (9:48 4th)

Michigan State misses field-goal attempt after drive stalls in Michigan territory

Michigan State takes over at its own 2. The Spartans lead 20-17 with 2:15 to go in the third quarter.

Jordon Simmons rushes for a yard on first down. Rocky Lombardi takes a shot to Ricky White down the sideline, again beating Vincent Gray, for a completion of 40 yards to the Michigan State 43. White has four catches for 142 yards.

Lombardi goes back to White on the next play for a gain of 5. Jalen Perry subs in for Vincent Gray, but Lombardi attacks him anyway. Perry is flagged for defensive holding, which gives the Spartans a first down at the Michigan 42.

Lombardi is forced to throw it away under pressure on first down. He's wrapped up at the line for no gain on second down. David Ojabo is flagged for offsides before the third-down play, bringing up third-and-5. Absolutely no discipline from the Wolverines.

END 3RD: Michigan 20, Michigan State 17 

Lombardi and White move the chains with a 6-yard completion. 

Lombardi takes a deep throw to Nailor, and Gemon Green drops an interception. Michigan needs a turnover to change the momentum. Connor Heyward rushes for 2 yards on second down, bringing up third-and-8 at the 29. Lombardi rushes for 6 yards to make it fourth-and-2.

Injury alert: Michigan VIPER Michael Barrett was hurt on the play. He walked off the field after being tended to by the training staff.

Matt Coghlin misses a 40-yard field goal attempt.

Michigan offense continues to struggle in third

Michigan takes back over at the 25 after a touchback.

Joe Milton's first two passes of the drive are a bit forced, and both fall incomplete. He hits Giles Jackson in double coverage on third down for a gain of 15 yards to the Michigan 40.

Milton's throw to Erick All misses the mark. Haskins is dropped for no gain on second down.

Michigan then takes a false-start penalty. Milton throws to All, and it's off the mark.

Michigan State takes 20-17 lead with field goal

Michigan State gets it at the 21, looking to regain its lead. 

Jalen Nailor rushes for 3 yards on first down. Rocky Lombardi rolls right, shows great patience, and hits Nailor for a pickup of 15 to the Michigan State 39.

Elijah Collins gets his first touch of the game on the next play, no gain. Lombardi looks for Jayden Reed down the sideline, but the throw is beyond the target. Lombardi has no problem stepping up and delivering a great ball to Ricky White on third down for a gain of 19 to the Michigan 42.

Injury alert: Michigan DE Kwity Paye is down on the play.

Lombardi's first-down throw to Reed misses the mark. Lombardi takes off on second down, and Aidan Hutchinson makes a great play to drop the Michigan State quarterback for a gain of only 4.  Connor Heyward rushes for 4 yards on first down. 

Matt Coghlin's 51-yard field goal attempt is good.

Michigan answers with touchdown drive to tie game at 17

Michigan takes over at the 25 after a touchback. The Wolverines trail 17-10 with 12:26 to go in the third quarter.

Joe Milton throws complete to Erick All on first down, but he's wrapped up for no gain. Milton's throw Roman Wilson on second down is perfectly placed for a gain of 11 to the Michigan 36. 

Zach Charbonnet catches a short pass from Milton on first down for a gain of 4. Hassan Haskins rushes for 2 yards on second down. Milton hits Wilson over the middle on third down for a 17-yard connection. 

Milton takes a shot for the end zone to Mike Sainristil on the next play, but the pass is too far for the receiver. Shakur Brown piledrives Giles Jackson on a quick pass, but he's flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for stepping over him.

It's first-and-10 at the Michigan State 26.

Charbonnet is stopped for a gain of 1 on first down. AJ Henning rushes for 9 yards and a new set of downs on second down.

Milton threads a throw to Ronnie Bell through four Michigan State defenders, and the pass is complete at the 1. Blake Corum finishes the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown.

Michigan State adds to lead early in third quarter

The Spartans take over at their own 38.

Michigan State bombs one on its first play of the second half, once again beating Vincent Gray down the sideline for a 50-yard completion to the Michigan 12.

Rocky Lombardi throws incomplete to Jalen Nailor on first down. Jordon Simmons gets 2 yards on second down. Michigan's defensive backs get good coverage on third down, and force Lombardi to throw it away.

Matt Coghlin's 27-yard field goal is good.

Michigan offense in slow-motion to start second half

Michigan gets the ball to start the second half. It's first-and-10 at the 29.

Joe Milton rushes for a yard on first down. He has an open Mike Sainristil on second down, but the throw is straight-up dropped. Milton is wrapped up after a 3-yard run on third down.

Will Hart's punt is downed at the Michigan State 38.

Michigan State stunts Wolverines before halftime

Michigan takes over at the 32, down 14-10, with 1:52 to go before halftime.

Joe Milton throws incomplete to Ronnie Bell with the pressure on. His second-down throw to Bell is to no-man's land, another incompletion. Milton throws a strike to Roman Wilson on third down for a 26-yard completion, giving Michigan a first down at the Spartan 42.

Milton misses Mike Sainristil on first down. Michigan is flagged for holding on the next play, making it second-and-20. Milton goes back to Bell on second down, but the throw is high. Milton's third-down throw is caught by Cornelius Johnson, but only for a gain of 7.

Jordon Simmons picks up a ton on a first-down screen, but Jalen Nailor is flagged for a blindside block. That's a personal foul that'll bring up first-and-20.

Injury alert: Michigan LB Cam McGrone was injured on the play and is being helped by the Michigan training staff.

Haskins takes the wildcat for a gain of only 1 on first down. They stay in the wildcat on third down, as Haskins attempts a pass to a wide-open Carter Selzer that's short and batted away by Antjuan Simmons.

Michigan State takes over at the 15 after stopping Michigan once again.

Jordon Simmons hits a hole up the middle and reaches the 21 for a gain of 6 on first down. Jalen Nailor drops a bubble screen on second down. Michigan gets some linemen in Lombardi's face on third down and forces a throw that's just out of Nailor's reach.

Giles Jackson is dropped at the 25 on the punt return.

Michigan offense continues to struggle in second quarter

Michigan is back on his heels after allowing the Michigan State touchdown. The Wolverines will take over at the 13, down 14-7 with 9:40 to go in the second quarter.

Joe Milton takes off for a pickup of 17 yards on first down.

Blake Corum goes up the middle on the next play and the hole closes in a hurry, no gain. Milton takes off again on second down for a gain of 4. Milton's throw on third down is caught by Giles Jackson, but only for a gain of 4. Just not a good play design.

Will Hart's punt is downed at the Michigan State 15.

Michigan State takes over at its own 32.

Michigan State's wide receivers keep beating Michigan's secondary on the outside. Jalen Nailor blows past Vincent Gray and gets wide open for a 53-yard throw from Rocky Lombardi to the Michigan 15.

Nailor rushes for 8 yards on the next play to get to the 7. Jordon Simmons picks up 3 and a first down with some hard running.

Simmons goes down at the 2 on first down after a gain of 2. Lombardi fakes the give and misfires to Jayden Reed in the end zone, incomplete. Connor Heyward gets open near the pylon and Lombardi hits him to regain the Spartan lead.

Joe Milton's first-down pass gives Michigan some room to breathe, a 13-yard throw to Roman Wilson that moves the chains.

Milton hits Ronnie Bell on first down fora pickup of 7. Chris Evans is gang tackled in the backfield for a loss of 5 on second down. Milton takes off on third down but is knocked out of bounds short of the line to gain.

Will Hart's punt is fair caught at the Michigan State 32.

Michigan State takes advantage of penalties, before punting away because of them

Michigan State is pinned at the 8 after a great punt. It'll look to get back on track after a punt on its last possession.

Michigan defensive back Vincent Gray gets flagged for holding on first down, which gives the Spartans 15 yards for free. It's first-and-10 at the 18.

Rocky Lombardi's throw on first down is incomplete. Connor Heyward rushes for 5 yards on second down. Michigan's Cam McGrone is flagged for "simulating a snap count" and a delay of game. First down, Michigan State.

Heyward is stuffed for no gain on first down. Lombardi's throw to Jayden Reed is a touch too far and falls incomplete. Gray gets called again for pass interference on third down, a 15-yard penalty that gives Michigan State another first down for free at its own 43.

Simmons rushes for 2 yards on first down and no gain on second down, bringing the first quarter to a close.

Aidan Hutchinson jumps offsides before third down, making it third-and-3. Very undisciplined game for Michigan thus far. 

Next it's Michigan State shooting itself in the foot. Jalen Nailor is flagged for an illegal block on Heyward's third-down attempt, which makes it third-and-15. 

Heyward is stopped after a gain of 1. Bryce Baringer's punt is downed at the Michigan 8.

Rocky Lombardi rolls left, has Jalen Nailor down the field in single-coverage, and lets it fly, but the throw is just beyond Nailor's reach. Lombardi takes off on second down and slides for a gain of 6. Simmons is dropped for a loss of 4 yards on third down.

Michigan answers with Corum's rushing touchdown to tie game at 7

Giles Jackson has a great return on the kickoff, taking it to the 40.

Chris Evans rips up the middle on first down for a pickup of 16 yards to the Michigan State 44.

Joe Milton hits Hassan Haskins on a short route for 4 yards on the next play. Haskins loses 2 yards on the ground on second down, bringing up third-and-8. Milton is hit as he throws on third down but still gets off a strike to Jackson over the middle for a 12-yard gain that keeps the drive alive. It's first-and-10 at the 30.

Michigan State's defensive line continues to get penetration, and swallows Milton in the pocket for a loss of 4. Milton runs some RPO and gets off a throw to AJ Henning that gets 15 yards and a new first down at the 19.

Next it's Cornelius Johnson making a play, hauling in an 11-yard throw to make it first-and-goal at the 8. 

Blake Corum gets to the edge on first down, hits the burners, and gets to the pylon for an 8-yard touchdown.

Jayden Reed takes a jet sweep on first down for a gain of 7 yards. Rocky Lombardi hits Jordon Simmons with a shovel pass for a 6-yard gain on the next play.

Simmons breaks free on first down for a 28-yard pickup to the Michigan 30.

Ricky White goes up and over a Michigan defender and hauls in a toss from Lombardi for a 30-yard Michigan State touchdown.

Michigan lines up at the 40 to start their opening drive.

Zach Charbonnet is swallowed whole by Jacub Panasiuk for a loss of 5. Joe Milton is flushed from the pocket on second down, rolls right, and throws too low for Erick All. Milton tries to escape up the middle on third down, but Panasiuk is there again to meet the Michigan quarterback for no gain.
