Rocky Lombardi

Indiana up next for uneven Michigan State

Iowa mercifully ran most of the clock out with their final drive.

That's it. What a game.

Michigan State plays host to juggernaut Indiana next weekend.

Iowa 49, Michigan State 7; final

Thorne in at QB for Lombardi

Three-and-out for Iowa.

Payton Thorne is in at quarterback for Michigan State, he's apparently the No. 2 QB.

Three runs and then incomplete on fourth down. Iowa ball.

MSU moves the ball a little

Michigan State is just trying to get some momentum going forward at this point.

Rocky Lombardi found Brandon Wright for a 13-yard first-down conversion on 3rd-and-8. He then threw a deep ball that should've been picked after the receiver fell.

Punt. Iowa ball.

Iowa 49, Michigan State 7; 9:29 4th

Hawkeyes score again, 49-7

It's Mekhi Sargent for a 6-yard touchdown run, finishing a 45-yard drive. It remains ugly for the Spartans.

Defenses stingy as clock stalls

There was another Iowa punt! Then a Michigan State punt!

Rocky Lombardi hits Terry Lockett Jr. for 4, then misses him on third down as the receiver follows his first catch with a drop.

Two completions for Lombardi... then another punt

Rocky Lombardi's struggles continue, though he did complete two passes to open the latest drive, which resulted in another punt.

Iowa 42, Michigan State 7; 1:34 3rd

Iowa punts

Iowa got a first down on the first play of its drive, but it's punting now too.

Michigan State ball. Need more clock ticking.

MSU forces punt, punts

Iowa goes three-and-out, punting on 4th-and-1.

Michigan State gains 2 yards, punts.

Go outside.

Iowa 42, Michigan State 7; 5:22 3rd

More of the same from MSU...

Elijah Collins short run, Rocky Lombardi incomplete pass, false start, another Lombardi incomplete pass, MSU punt.

Tyler Goodson 71 yards on the run for Iowa, setting up a Mekhi Sargent 2-yard TD.

MSU on the scoreboard, 35-7

Hey, another long pass from Rocky Lombardi to Jalen Nailor. This time for 57 yards.

Ricky White drops a pass in the end zone, Connor Heyward gets a few, then a first-down catch by Tyler Hunt at the 2.

Hunt then ran it in on 3rd-and-goal from the 1 for the score.

Iowa 35, Michigan State 7; 10:06 3rd

More agony for Lombardi, MSU

Oh Lordy, Iowa returns a Rocky Lombardi fumble for a touchdown to open the second half, though there should be a review.

It is returned and called intentional grounding though. Michigan State ball still.

They've got to get Lombardi out of there.

Lombardi hobbling, just a mess

Drop on second down, near INT on third, MSU punts before it could get any worse. At least it wasn't returned this time.

During the final possession, MSU's Jacub Panasiuk left the field with an injury. Throw the damn towel.

Lombardi throws a pick-6 while slipping

This is not the homecoming Iowa native Rocky Lombardi envisioned.

He slipped on a throw for his third interception. It was returned 54 yards by Riley Moss for a touchdown.

Iowa 35, Michigan State 0; 1:30 2nd

Iowa takes punt back for score... ugh

MSU forces another punt and Rocky Lombardi recovers a fumbled shotgun snap on his first play.

MSU then punted from their own end zone and Iowa's Charlie Jones ran it back 54 yards for a touchdown.

Iowa 28, Michigan State 0; 1:57 2nd

Lombardi finally connects, MSU misses FG

First big play for the Michigan State offense as Rocky Lombardi opens the drive with a pretty pass to Jalen Nailor for 56 yards from his own end zone.

After three runs though, Matt Coghlin missed a 48-yard FG.

Iowa 21, Michigan State 0; 3:52 2nd

MSU defense stepping up after slow start

Both offenses have settled into the expected course of action: A punt fest.

Iowa goes three-and-out and MSU's Jayden Reed calls for a fair catch inside his 10-yard line while backpedaling.

Iowa 21, Michigan State 0; 5:57 2nd

Is Rocky Lombardi injured?

Big drive for Michigan State after the field goal miss goes nowhere.

The Spartans had a 3rd-and-12 and Rocky Lombardi bounced a long throw to Ricky White, last week's hero.

The ESPN commentators are speculating if Lombardi has a lower-body injury and if a QB change needs to be made. Not enough drive from the lower body, Dan Orlovsky said.

MSU punts, Iowa ball.

Iowa 21, Michigan State 0; 6:47 2nd

Another Lombardi INT a baffler

Hey, at least there was still last week.

Rocky Lombardi looked to Trenton GIllison for a short pass but was intercepted.

Iowa can't do much from there and settles for a 37-yard field-goal attempt, which was missed wide right by Keith Duncan.

Iowa 21, Michigan State 0; 8:45 2nd

Iowa dominant with run game, 21-0

Tyler Goodson with his second run TD of the game and Iowa's offensive line is having its way in this one.

The Hawkeyes have rushed 80 yards on 15 carries and Goodson's two TDs.

It's just ugly for Mel Tucker's team so far today.

Iowa 21, Michigan State 0; 11:16 2nd

Hospital tradition very cool, at least

Very cool scene as the players, coaches and small amount of fans wave to the children in the nearby hospital virtually at the close of the first quarter. Great tradition.

Maybe that makes the Spartans punting again and Iowa taking the return across midfield easier to swallow.

Iowa 14, Michigan State 0; 14:16 2nd

Spartans driving as first quarter ends

MSU picked up just its second first down on a nice Rocky Lombardi throw to Jordon Simmons on third down.

The Spartans will start the second quarter with 2nd-and-7 from their own 34.

Iowa ends the quarter with seven first downs.

Iowa offense on a roll early, 14-0

Iowa picks up a couple first downs to move across midfield, as Nico Ragaini caught a crossing route for 28 yards on 3rd-and-7 to key the drive.

A few plays later, Spencer Petras found Brandon Smith for a back shoulder toss against MSU's Kalon Gervin for the 14-yard score. Great adjustment by Smith and the Spartans are in

Iowa 14, Michigan State 0; 4:31 1st

Lombardi throws to no one, intercepted

Connor Heyward gets the first touch for the Spartans, catching a short Rocky Lombardi pass. Jalen Nailor lost 5 yards on a run, but Lombardi converted a third down to Trenton Gillison.

Lombardi then evaded pressure but threw an interception to no one on the run. Iowa takes over deep in its own territory on the Jack Koerner INT.

Iowa 7, Michigan State 0; 8:28 1st

Iowa starts strong early, leads 7-0

Host Iowa got the ball first and moved the ball at will.

Quarterback Spencer Petras had the Hawkeyes rolling, gaining three first downs on the first drive in just five plays.

However, a false start on first-and-goal from the 6 made things a bit more complicated.

But on third down, Tyler Goodson ran in for the score.

Iowa 7, Michigan State 0; 11:07 1st

Spread down to 5.5 points for Hawkeyes

After opening up more like a touchdown in most sportsbooks, the spread is down to 5.5 points in favor of Iowa, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
