Car in Macomb County high-speed chase may be linked to double homicide

Two people arrested Friday night after leading police on a chase in a stolen car in Macomb County have been turned over to Clinton Township Police as part of its investigation into a double homicide outside an apartment complex.

The driver was a 20-year-old male from Warren, and the passenger was a 19-year-old male from Mount Clemens, Michigan State Police officials announced in a tweet early Saturday.

Clinton Township police officials said that around 6:35 p.m. on Friday, police were called to Knottingham Apartments on Wellington Crescent near Gratiot Avenue where they found two females shot to death inside a car.

According to a witness who spoke to police, the women were unloading groceries from the vehicle when two suspects sitting in a car across the parking lot exited their vehicle and opened fire on the women.

A long gun and pistol were recovered from the car. Police said a motive remains unknown.

At about 6:45 p.m. Friday, state troopers learned sheriff's deputies were pursuing a blue Dodge Charger believed to be connected to the deaths on Interstate 94, the agency reported.

A Metro North trooper spotted the car and attempted a traffic stop at 16 Mile/Metropolitan Parkway and Harper, but the driver sped off, Clinton Township police said.

A pursuit continued until the suspect's vehicle crashed into a cement block in the median at westbound Eight Mile and Gratiot, near the Detroit-Eastpointe city limits, according to the post. State police posted dashcam footage that depicted troopers ordering the driver and passenger out of the car.

Both were taken into custody and taken to Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit where they were treated for injuries, including broken bones. One suspect had shot himself in the leg.
