Recap: Michigan reaches Elite Eight with 76-58 win over Florida State

Game summary

Michigan pounded the paint early and often against Florida State and scored 50 points inside to earn a 76-58 win in the Sweet 16 on Sunday.

They will play the winner of Alabama and UCLA on Sunday night in Tuesday's Elite Eight matchup.

Brandon Johns and Hunter Dickinson each had a team-high 14 points with Dickinson adding eight rebounds and Johns six. Franz Wagner had 13 with 10 rebounds and five assists and Chaundee Brown scored 12 for Michigan (23-4).

Malik Osborne scored 12 and M.J. Walker 10 for Florida State (18-7).

Michigan puts Florida State away in second half

Brandon Johns comes up with a big 2 points out of the break to give Michigan a double-digit lead, 52-41. He leads Michigan with 14 today.

Raiquan Gray travels, leading to a layup for Chaundee Brown. Brown gets a rebound at the other end and dishes to Mike Smith, who blows past everybody for a layup, and a foul. What a huge sequence for Michigan coming out of this last break.

Timeout Florida State: Michigan 56, Florida State 41 (9:48 2nd)

Scottie Barnes scores out of the break, but Michigan comes right back with buckets from Franz Wagner on consecutive possessions to make it a 17-point game, 60-43. Wagner has 11 with seven rebounds and four assists so far.

Hunter Dickinson gets a bounce pass from Wagner and slams it home to give Michigan a 19-point lead in the second half.

Malik Osborne gives Florida State some life with a 3-pointer, but Chaundee Brown gets it right back with a 3 on the other end.

M.J. Walker, having somehow returned from what looked like a pretty gruesome ankle injury, scores in the paint. Hunter Dickinson makes the front end of a one-and-one before Wagner gets a pair of free throws a few moments later, making both. It's a 20-point game.

Osborne drains a 3, and Brooks drives and scores in the paint on the other end.

After Michigan gets a stop, Dickinson puts home a tap-in while getting fouled. It's a 21-point game, and Dickinson has a free throw when they return.

Michigan keeping Florida State at bay in second half

Hunter Dickinson hits the front end on a trip to the line out of the break. Michigan leads by 11.

Malik Osborne and Anthony Polite hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Florida State, and all of a sudden, it's a 5-point game. Mike Smith answers with a layup and hits the and-1 free throw to push it back to 8.

M.J. Walker rolls his ankle hard while fighting for a rebound, and it'll be a huge loss if he can't return: He's averaged 12.3 points per game for Florida State.

Austin Davis scores in the paint to push the lead back to 10. Eli Brooks goes back to Davis on the next possession, and he converts with a nice spin move to make it 48-36.

Osborne makes another 3-pointer to end the 7-0 run for Michigan. Brooks answers with a 2-pointer inside, which Polite matches on the other end.

Polite comes up with a teal but Rayquan Evans is called for a charge on the ensuing fast break.

Florida State comes alive to open half, Michigan still leads by 10

Brandon Johns gets inside for 2 points to open the half, putting Michigan up 34-21. Anthony Polite matches with a pair of free throws at the other end.

Franz Wagner drives, finds Johns inside, and Johns misses both to allow M.J. Walker a layup at the other end that cuts the Wolverines' lead to 9. Then Florida State forces a five-second violation.

Raiquan Gray takes a personal foul just moments later, and that's huge. He averaged more than 12 points per game this season and came out early in the first half because of foul trouble.

Wagner drives to put Michigan up 36-25. Polite and Johns trade buckets inside to maintain the 11-point lead for Michigan.

Gray scores in the paint and adds an and-1 free throw to make it 38-30 in favor of Michigan. Eli Brooks hits a layup to balance things out for Michigan and push the lead back to 10.

Scottie Barnes is called for a foul before the break.

Scottie Barnes takes an elbow from a driving Franz Wagner and is called for a foul, but is forced to leave the game for discomfort in what appears to be his midsection. Wagner makes one of two free throws.

Balsa Koprivica gets to the line and makes both. It's 28-17, Michigan.

Chaundee Brown scores inside after a rebound and Koprivica answers with a 2 on the other end.

Brandon Johns is sent to the line for Michigan and makes both. It's 32-19, Wolverines. P.J. Walker will hit a jumpshot after Florida State gets second life on the rebound.

Mike Smith misses a jumper to end the half.

Michigan takes largest lead of game vs. Florida State

Michigan gets the ball to Austin Davis inside and he puts home a bucket to make it a 10-0 run for Michigan.

Balsa Koprivica breaks the run with a dunk that followed a foul on Terrance Williams. Rayquan Evans drives and cuts the lead to 7 on the next possession.

Chaundee Brown drives for a basket, which Scottie Barnes matches with a dunk on the other end. It's 21-14, Michigan.

Hunter Dickinson gets multiple chances inside and eventually puts home his first field goal of the game.

Florida State turns it over out of the break with a travel.

Michigan, Florida State off to sluggish start in Sweet 16

Both teams get a 2-point bucket on their first possession to start the game.

M.J. Walker comes right back and hits a jumper, and Florida State gets a steal before RaiQuan Gray turns the ball over with an offensive foul.

Brandon Johns gets fouled on a shot inside and picks up both free throws to make it 4-4.

Juwan Howard wants a carry called on FSU but doesn't get it. He chirps in the official's ear as FSU comes up with an empty possession.

Hunter Dickinson picks up an offensive foul as we head into the first break.

The Michigan men's basketball team is on the doorstep of the Elite Eight.

Michigan (22-4) takes on Florida State (18-6) in an NCAA Tournament regional semifinal Sunday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, beginning at 5 p.m.

The Wolverines are seeking their second trip to a regional final in the last three NCAA  Tournaments, following 2018's national title game appearance.
