Recap: Day 3 of NFL Draft

The Detroit News

The Detroit Lions have just one pick left in this year's NFL Draft, but the experts are liking what they see out of Detroit so far.

New general manager Brad Holmes grabbed USC wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown with his first pick (112th overall) of Day 3 before trading up to grab Purdue linebacker Derrick Barnes the very next pick.

And finally, with the third-to-last pick, Holmes went out and closed his first draft with the Lions by selecting Oregon State running back Jermar Jefferson at No. 257.

The News' Nolan Bianchi has you covered with every pick of Day 3 from start to finish, complete with live updates from the press conferences of Detroit's newest rookies.

Live updates from LB Derrick Barnes' introductory press conference

► On how versatility will help his game translate to the NFL

"Me, personally as a player, I love to be on the field, I love to contribute to the team, I love doing what the coach asks me to do...Being versatile is huge in the NFL, and I'm glad I can bring that to the table." Adds that playing linebacker and defensive line is "awesome."

► On what his strength is

"I'm excited to learn. I think my best football is ahead of me." Barnes says he hopes to work his "tail off' and contribute on special teams, learn from the veterans.

► On what interactions he had with Detroit during the draft process

Barnes says he talked to a lot of Lions coaches during the Super Bowl and that his coach at Purdue would text him to say, "the Lions love you." He has a lion tattoo on his chest, so it seems like a perfect fit despite the "long two days."

He says that lions are his favorite animal because they're the king of the jungle and leaders. The tattoo covers his whole right pec, according to Barnes (no visuals attached).

► On his experience with special teams

Barnes says he contributed a lot to special teams during his first two years at Purdue, and became known as the guy who would go make a play. He played all over the field on special teams, and attributes his success with that to being "coachable."

► On describing his playing style

"Just going back to being a versatile player...I think that playing defensive end and linebacker helped me a lot...that kind of helps my game out." He said that playing middle linebacker helped him see the field better in every other position, because he knew what everyone else was trying to do, and is thankful for the opportunity to play in a lot of different roles.

► On his coverage skills

"Always willing to take on new techniques and new tasks...I think I can be great in coverage. I think I have the athleticism and speed to do it...I didn't do it much at Purude, but I'm always willing to learn, and I showed some flashes of being able to (cover) in college." Barnes adds that "you can't be great unless you're willing to listen and learn."

►On why his sack production dipped

I would just say, playing defensive end when I was strictly playing defensive end/outside linebacker...just didn't happen. They didn't use me as a defensive end in practice, so it was just like a gameplan thing depending on down and distance."

He adds that he just didn't get that many reps on the edge during his final season at Purdue.

Live updates from Amon-Ra St. Brown's introductory press conference

► On not getting picked during Day 2

"It's definitely just my mentality growing up...I'm competitive, I'm a dog. Last night I had a bittersweet feeling in my mouth, and all that made me realize is that I've got to go harder...it's the beginning of a chapter for me."

St. Brown said that he fired up the Juggs machine last night when realizing he wasn't taken by a team.

► On Jared Goff

St. Brown says that despite playing his college ball in proximity to Jared Goff's former NFL home in Los Angeles, the two have never worked out together, but he's "excited" to work with the new Lions quarterback.

► On his mentality behind making contested catches

"It's a lot of things. Being strong at the point of the catch is huge," St. Brown says, adding that being able to track the ball and go and get it is "huge," and "having that mentality...that no matter who's there, you're getting that 50-50 ball."
