Water main leak fixed in downtown Detroit

Detroit officials have repaired a water main leak that affected an eight-block section of downtown on Monday.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department said the fix was done after 6 p.m. and downtown buildings, business owners and managers were notified.

"DWSD will restore and reopen Farmer Street after a sewer inspection is completed while the street is excavated — there is no impact to sewer service," the department said in a statement.

The business owners and managers were advised to flush their plumbing before using the water system as a precaution in case sediment entered the system during the repair, the department said.

A 30-inch water main started leaking near Farmer and Bate streets late last week, and the city began notifying building owners and managers on Woodward Avenue, Beaubien Boulevard, and East Congress and East Lafayette streets that repairs would begin Monday.
