Detroit firefighter dead, man in custody in Troy gas station shooting
Troy — A Detroit firefighter is dead after being shot Monday night at a gas station following a suspected road rage incident, police said.
The firefighter was identified Tuesday as Senior Lt. Francis Dombrowski, 55, of Rochester Hills, said Detroit Fire Commissioner Eric Jones.
Authorities said a suspect is in custody in connection with the incident, but no additional information has been released.
Officers were called at about 9:45 p.m. Monday to the parking lot of a Shell gas station on Rochester Road at East Wattles for a report of a shooting, according to authorities. They found Dombrowski wounded.
Police and paramedics administered aid and Dombrowski was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, officials said.
According to a preliminary investigation, Dombrowski left his home in a black Ford Crown Victoria and traveled south on Rochester Road. A white Jeep Cherokee, model year 2014 to 2018, followed him into the gas station parking lot and an argument began.
"(Investigators) do not believe the parties knew each other," said Sgt. Jason Clark, spokesman for the Troy Police Department.
A person inside the Jeep fired multiple rounds at Dombrowski. The Jeep then left and headed east on Wattles, officials said. The gas station's security cameras captured the incident and showed the passenger in the Jeep was involved in the shooting.
Officials said the Jeep's occupants arrived at the Troy Police Department early Tuesday and identified themselves. Police arrested the passenger in the Jeep after interviewing him.
Troy police said they will submit their findings to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for review and determination of charges.
"Senior Lieutenant Francis Dombrowski served the citizens of Detroit and the Detroit Fire Department with honor and distinction for 29 years," Jones said in a statement Tuesday. "We are deeply saddened to hear about his tragic loss. He will be missed by his family, friends and his family here at the Detroit Fire Department."
Mayor Mike Duggan's office also released a statement.
"I stand with the entire Detroit Fire Department and our city in the tragic loss of Senior Lieutenant Francis Dombrowski who died on Monday evening, July 5 in Troy," Duggan said in the statement. "He will be missed terribly."
