TIGERSTigers 2, Indians 1The Detroit NewsTigers pitcher Gregory Soto reacts after the final out of the Tigers' 2-1 win over the Indians on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2021, at Progressive Field in Cleveland.Robin Buckson, Detroit NewsMANAGER AJ Hinch faces a very different kind of challenge in his second season in Detroit. There are legitimate expectations now where last year there were none. There is more proven talent around the diamond now, especially with the additions of Eduardo Rodriguez, Báez, Meadows and Barnhart. But there are also some potentially fatal holes (outfield defense, starting pitching depth, bullpen health and depth). And with the lockout-induced compressed schedule, flaws and depth shortages will be exposed. He has the task of shepherding Torkelson, and eventually Greene, through the inevitable growing pains and ups-and-downs of a rookie season — a job he did so masterfully last year with Baddoo. His ballclub is better, but so is the division it competes in. But the foundation he built last year, with the buy-in he's gotten universally from players, is sturdy.Robin Buckson, Detroit NewsFrom left, Tigers infielders Jonathan Schoop and Miguel Cabrera during batting practice before the game.
