Standoff at east side Detroit apartment building ends peacefully

Police on Thursday successfully negotiated the surrender of an armed man who barricaded himself inside an eastside Detroit apartment complex, officials said.

The standoff lasted for nearly 20 hours.

"I could not have been prouder of the work that these men and women did," Police Chief James White told reporters.

Police assemble outside the Parkview Tower and Square Apartments on the 1600 block of Robert Bradby Dr. where a man has barricaded himself after firing shots.

Officers were called at about 6:35 p.m. Wednesday to the Parkview Tower and Square near Chene and Robert Bradby for a report of shots fired, according to authorities.

They arrived and learned of a domestic violence incident involving a 39-year-old man and a woman he was dating, according to authorities.

The man said he wanted to die then "fired at least two volleys of shots" and took her hostage, police said.

Hostage negotiators were able to talk him into releasing the woman late Wednesday.

Officers cleared the floors nearest the apartment he was in as negotiations continued overnight.

White said the suspect would first be receiving mental and medical treatment, "then we’ll deal with whatever charges that he’ll be facing afterwards."
