Recap: Michigan rolls past Northwestern, 33-7

The stage has been set. 

The Michigan Wolverines took care of business at home Saturday, rolling past Northwestern, 33-7, to set up a battle of the unbeaten next Saturday in East Lansing.

Marco Cisco rushes for 4, then takes it for 16 yards on third-and-5 to move the chains.

Northwestern moves the ball downfield, but will run out of time.

Michigan misses field goal after more McCarthy magic

Michigan takes over at its own 49 after the fumble recovery on fourth down.

Donovan Edwards rushes for 3, and Cade McNamara hits Mike Sainristil for 8 to move the chains.

Edwards rushes for 1. J.J. McCarthy overthrows Sainristil on second down, but completes an 18-yard pass on third down to keep the drive alive.

Blake Corum rushes for no yardage, then catches a pass for 5 yards, then is stuffed after a gain of 2. Michigan goes for it on fourth-and-3: J.J. McCarthy pulls off a miraculous play to get the ball to his tight end for a first down, but a blindside block behind the play erases the gain.

Jake Moody's 47-yard field goal is no good.

Michigan avoids giving up points after turnover

Michigan takes over at its own 32, leading by 26 with 12:36 to go.

Donovan Edwards rushes for 8 yards on first down. He's stuffed for no gain on second down, but Hassan Haskins moves the chains with a 5-yard run.

Edwards takes a pass from J.J. McCarthy for 11 yards, but is stripped at the end of the run for a fumble recovered by Northwestern.

Anthony Tyus rushes for 2 yards. Jordan Mosley hauls in a 7-yard reception and fumbles out of bounds to end the play. Tyus is stuffed for no gain, and on fourth-and-1, Hilinski fumbles the snap. Aidan Hutchinson recovers at the 49 of Michigan.

J.J. McCarthy enters at quarterback for Michigan, and immediately takes the first-down run for a gain of 23 yards to the Northwestern 33.

McCarthy throws on the next play, an incompletion to Cornelius Johnson. The Wolverines are flagged for an ineligible man downfield on second down, and McCarthy will come back in to handle second-and-15, and he rushes for 13. Haskins is stuffed for 1 on third-and-2.

Northwestern takes over at its own 18, trailing 24-7 in the third quarter.

Ryan Hilinski's first-down pass is broken up by David Ojabo. Malik Washington hauls in the second-down reception for a gain of 4. Evan Hull is wrapped up for a gain of 1 on third down.

Michigan blocks the enusing Northwestern punt and recovers it at the 24.

An issue with the snap forces Ryan Hilinski to take a 6-yard sack. His second-down throw down the sideline falls incomplete. Evan Hull catches the edge on a third-down completion and gets up the sideline for a 26-yard gain to the Northwestern 40.

Andrew Clair rushes for 2 yards on first down. Josh Ross nearly intercepts a pass deflected by David Ojabo on second down. Northwestern converts on a third-down screen to Jacob Gill for a 13-yard gain.

A 7-yard completion and 4-yard run brings up first-and-10 at the 34.

DJ Turner is flagged for a bad pass interference call on the next play, which gives Northwestern first down at the 19.

A first-down reception loses 2, as Michigan forces two incompletions to end the drive.

Michigan takes 17-7 lead to open second half

Blake Corum nearly fumbles the kickoff to open the half, but Michigan will take over at its own 26.

Hassan Haskins is stuffed for a gain of 1, then 3. Rod Heard is flagged for defensive holding on the third-down pass, and that'll give Michigan first-and-10 at the 40.

Haskins gets no yardage on first down, and Blake Corum gets 5 on second down. Corum takes the third-down handoff for a gain of 24 yards to the Northwestern 31, where Michigan will have a new set of downs.

McNamara's shot on first down draws a pass interference penalty, and Michigan will have first-and-10 at the 16.

Corum cruises forward and picks up 11 yards on first down. Michigan rushes back to the line and hands off to Corum again, resulting in a Michigan touchdown.

Blake Corum rushes for 20 yards on first down, then pushes ahead for 7 to bring up second-and-3 at the 50.

Luke Schoonmaker hauls in a 10-yard reception, and Corum helps push Michigan down the field.

Erick All hauls in a 16-yard reception, and Michigan works its way inside the 10-yard-line of Northwestern.

McNamara throws to Mike Sainristil, and he's stripped behind the line of scrimmage. Northwestern recovers and will run out the clock to end the half.

Michigan adds field goal to take 10-0 lead

Cade McNamara's first-down pass goes incomplete, his second-down pass to Roman Wilson goes for 4 yards. Blake Corum moves the chains with a 6-yard pickup on third down.

A false start makes it first-and-15 at the 48 of Michigan.

McNamara's first-down pass goes for no gain, and he rushes for 4 on the next play. His third-down pass near the sideline is caught by Cornelius Johnson, a gain of 12 that'll bring up first-and-10 at the 36.

Hassan Haskins rushes for 3 yards, Donovan Edwards rushes for 6 yards, and Haskins takes it on third down for a pickup of 6 to make it first-and-10 at the 21.

Haskins gets it again, rushes for 5. Corum picks up 2, and Haskins goes for 6 and 4 to bring up second-and-goal at the 4.

Michigan, for some reason, runs two pass plays. They each go for 1 yard, bringing up fourth-and-goal from the 2.

Hutchinson continues to lead Michigan defense to big plays

Northwestern takes over at the 25.

Aidan Hutchinson gets into the backfield and forces a first-down incompletion. Evan Hull rushes for 2 yards on second down. Hutchinson gets into the backfield with Mike Morris reaching Hilinski from the other side, as the two edge rushers complete the sack for a loss of 12.

Derek Adams' punt is returned to the 43.

Haskins rushes for 5 yards on the next play. A.J. Henning breaks a pair of tackles en route to a 14-yard gain to bring the first quarter to a close.

McNamara throws incomplete to the end zone. J.J. McCarthy enters to give to Cornelius Johnson on a reverse that picks up 6 yards and brings up third-and-4. Corum shakes and bakes his way to an 11-yard gain, then punches it in from a yard out on the next play to give Michigan the game's first lead.

Evan Hull rushes for 1, and Ryan Hilinski throws complete on second down for a gain of 8.

Marshall Lang comes up with a third-down reception of 5 yards to move the chains to the 34.

Hilinski's next two passes go incomplete, bringing up third-and-10. Michigan penetrates the line with ease and that forces Hilinski to throw the ball into no-man's land, incomplete.

Ryan Hilinski fakes the handoff, and that opens up Malik Washington down the sideline for an easy pitch and catch that gets 29 yards to the Michigan 46.

Evan Hull rushes for 2 yards on the next play, which is erased by a completion on second down that goes for a loss of 3. Michigan gets pressure and forces Hilinski into a quick pass that's tipped by Aidan Hutchinson and falls to the ground, incomplete.

Derek Adams' punt is downed at the 2.

Pregame

No. 9 Michigan State fought through its trap game at Indiana — a 20-15 win — last week to remain undefeated heading into a bye week before next week's 12 p.m. kick in East Lansing.

The last time we saw Jim Harbaugh's squad in action, Michigan (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) was walking the tightrope of an upset at Nebraska, before going on to pull off a 32-29 win via two late field goals and a timely turnover.

The Wildcats (3-3, 1-2), meanwhile, got back on track with a 21-7 win over Rutgers last week after losing to Nebraska by 49. They held Rutgers to 222 yards on the day with just 63 of them coming on the ground, but are facing a bit more firepower this week in a Michigan offense led by the backfield of Hassan Haskins and Blake Corum.
