Signing day recap: 5-star OT Goodwin sticks with Kentucky over Michigan State

The Detroit News

The early signing period begins Wednesday in college football, and Michigan and Michigan State will start formalizing what appear to be strong recruiting classes, with the Wolverines projected to land in the top 10, and Spartans projected to put together a class that is among the top 20 in the country.

Follow along here for live updates from Detroit News contributor Nolan Bianchi.

5-star OT Kiyaunta Goodwin commits to Kentucky

No flips here. 5-star offensive tackle Kiyaunta Goodwin has elected to stick with his commitment to the University of Kentucky after hours of deliberation and multiple reschedulings on early National Signing Day.

Goodwin moved his commitment announcement from this morning to 3:30 p.m., then pushed it to 5, as he said on Twitter that it was the "toughest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life," and that he needs "more time."

That extra time wasn't enough for Michigan State coach Mel Tucker to bring him to East Lansing. Still, the late Spartan push was certainly impressive.

4-star DL Derrick Moore commits to Michigan

The 4-stars just keep rolling in. Michigan gets a commitment from the No. 16 defensive lineman in the country and the second-ranked prospect in Maryland, Derrick Moore.

Michigan gets commitment from 4-star WR Darrius Clemons

Count another one for the Wolverines. Michigan added to its haul on Wednesday by plucking a wide receiver with size and strength in Darrius Clemons from the state of Oregon.

Clemons (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) is the No. 19 receiving prospect in the country and the No. 1 recruit out of Oregon.

Michigan State lands Florida EDGE Khris Bogle from transfer portal

Not your typical early signing day commitment, but a signing day commitment nonetheless: Former Florida EDGE Khris Bogle has signed with the Michigan State Spartans.

Bogle, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior from Fort Lauderdale, played in 35 games for the Gators over three seasons, finishing with 69 total tackles, 12 for-loss, and eight sacks.

5-star Michigan State target Kiyaunta Goodwin pushes announcement to 5 p.m.

First it was supposed to happen this morning. Then it was going to happen at 3:30 this afternoon. And now, the announcement of 5-star offensive tackle and current Kentucky commit Kiyaunta Goodwin will come at 5 p.m., live on CBS, according to a post from his Twitter account.

Goodwin committed to Kentucky in April but took an official visit to Michigan State on Dec. 10, and it's speculated that he could be a late flip for the Spartans. With the way that he keeps delaying where he should sign on the dotted line, it's anyone's guess as to which way he's leaning.

Michigan State signs 4-star WR Antonio Gates Jr.

Whoop, there it is. Michigan State signs one of its top commits for the 2022 class in Dearborn Fordson wide receiver Antonio Gates Jr.

Gates, the son of legendary NFL tight end Antonio Gates, has been committed to the Spartans since July. He is the No. 36 wide receiver in the 2022 class and is ranked fifth amongst all prospects from the state of Michigan.

Deion Sanders, Jackson State flip nation's No. 1 recruit

Travis Hunter can play any position at any school. So naturally, he's headed to ... Jackson State? That's right. Deion Sanders has flipped the nation's No. 1 recruit for the 2022 class from his alma mater.

Hunter, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound cornerback/running back from Suwanee, Georgia, committed to Florida State in March 2020. But he idolized Sanders growing up, and now, the former Florida State legend has just stolen the Seminoles' top recruit in what is a completely unprecedented move.

Michigan flips 3-star QB Alex Orji from Virginia Tech

Michigan has added its second quarterback of the 2022 signing class, flipping 3-star quarterback Alex Orji on Wednesday.

The former Virginia Tech commit is the nation's 47th-ranked quarterback and 113th-ranked prospect from the state of Texas.

Michigan lands commitment, LOI from 4-star S Keon Sabb

Well that's a big one for the Wolverines. Michigan lands 4-star safety Keon Sabb out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Sabb (6-foot-2, 200 pounds), was previously committed to Clemson but decommitted on Dec. 6. He is Florida's 10th-ranked overall prospect and the nation's 10th-ranked safety prospect.

4-star Cass Tech DL Deone Walker chooses Kentucky over Michigan

Count one for Big Blue. Sorry, Michigan fans — not that Big Blue.

4-star Cass Tech defensive lineman Deone Walker has chosen Kentucky over Michigan and signed his letter of intent. Walker, a 6-6, 350-pound Detroit native was the state's third-ranked prospect and the nation's 26th-ranked defensive line prospect.

Michigan State flips 3-star CB Caleb Coley

The Mel Tucker influence in Georgia is strong. Michigan State lands 3-star Georgia cornerback Caleb Coley, a former Vanderbilt commit that both committed to Michigan State and signed his letter of intent on Wednesday morning.

Coley is the nation's 43rd-ranked cornerback prospect.

Michigan flips 3-star WR Amorion Walker from Notre Dame

Moments after losing a commit, Michigan flips one of their own in snatching up 3-star wide receiver Amorion Walker from the Fighting Irish. Walker, a 6-foot-4, 175-pound receiver from Louisiana, also had offers from Alabama, LSU, and other strong SEC programs.

Walker is the nation's 34th-ranked ATH prospect.

Texas flips Michigan commit Ethan Burke

The day starts with a loss for the Michigan Wolverines. Texas flips 3-star EDGE Ethan Burke, a Westlake, Texas native. Burke, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound pass rusher, made his announcement via Twitter this morning.

MSU target Goodwin to sign later today

Spartan fans hoping for a decision from prized 5-star offensive tackle Kiyaunta Goodwin will have to wait — but not as long as some may have thought.

Goodwin, the nation's 25th-ranked prospect from the 2022 recruiting class, said earlier that he was not going to make his decision today, but CBS Sports is now reporting that he will make his announcement in-studio on their 247 Sports Early Signing Day show.
